🧠 Real-World Concern: our belief that we can control or dominate nature, tech, and one another without consequences. 🌍 How Atwood Symbolises It: Each “Age” shows how humans became more arrogant from worshipping gods, to making money the most important thing, to destroying the environment. The last line, “Pray for us, who once, too, thought we could fly,” reminds us of this tragic hubris... humans thought they could go beyond nature’s limits, but instead brought about their own downfall.🔄 Comparison to Another Dystopia: In Gattaca, this same kind of hubris appears when people try to create perfect genes through science. But instead of a perfect world, they build a cold and unfair society that punishes those who are naturally different.🎭 Symbolism idea: Mirrors show us what we want to see, just like societies full of hubris convince themselves they’re all-powerful. But when the illusion cracks, the mirror breaks, and so does their world. 🛠 Future Thinking - Worldbuilding Spark: A teen technician discovers a hidden seed vault in her concrete, surveilled city where nature is banned and simulations reign. As she grows real plants in secret, the city's systems begin to glitch. Her choice: destroy the vault to preserve the illusion OR let it grow and risk collapse.

⭐️Choose a theme from Atwood’s Time Capsule Found on a Dead Planet, such as hubris, greed, environment, control, morality & spirituality, extinction, technological advancement, legacy or regret.

Use the headings below to guide your analysis. Aim for depth and insight as your goal is to uncover what the poem is saying about us, and how dystopian fiction can reflect and exaggerate our flaws.

🧠 Real-World Concern
What issue or mindset from today’s world is Atwood critiquing through this theme? Think about human behaviour, systems, or values.

🌍 How Atwood Symbolises It
How is this theme represented in Time Capsule? Consider the structure of the “Ages”, language choices, or specific images. Include a relevant quote if you can.

🔄 Comparison to Another Dystopia
Where else have you seen this theme explored in dystopian fiction? You might refer to Gattaca, 1984, The Hunger Games, The Giver, Wall-E, Divergent, Maze Runner, Ready Player One or another dystopian text you know. What similarities or contrasts do you notice?

🎭 Symbolism Idea
What image or object could represent this theme in a dystopia of your own? Think metaphorically... what captures the deeper idea?

🛠 Future Thinking – Worldbuilding Spark
If you were to build a dystopian world that explores this theme, what would it look like? Describe a possible setting or society that reflects the same concern or warning.
