I was not a huge fan of this book because I am not a huge fan of snakes. I did learn a lot about snakes from this book though. I was unaware that male snakes wake up and wait for the females to wake up as well before they even attempt to go find food. I also learned that snakes can get into trees, I know what I'm doing if I see a snake.

I started to read this short, children's lit, chapter book when i was in an observation with a class of 3rd graders. I was surprised to find out that this story was based off of a legend that the author had heard, and I couldn't help the near waterworks I was in when I read/listened to the ending. It is so heartwarming and devastating at the same time.

It is fictitious, but it can also be quite realistic in what it describes. This book has been one that I look back on when I need some fun advice about how to keep going. It also helps me remember that things do get better.

"A person's a person, no matter how small" (Dr. Seuss). I always loved this story because of this quote and because Horton stood by what he believed regardless of what anyone in Nool thought. But looking at it now, I can see that it has aspects of diversity within it. The quote can be manipulated to say a person is a person, no matter the color of their skin, what they believe, the gender they associate with, etc. It turns out that he wrote it as a book about equality - a lesson that he had had to learn for himself.
The movie version of this book is just as entertaining and crazy, but it does give more voice to the Whos than the book ever did. (I suggest you watch it. The ending video is below.)

I was surprised to learn that this was one of the final stories that Dr. Seuss had been working on and the reason that it had such a strange form of illustration compared to the other Dr. Seuss books was due to it being finished and illustrated by people that weren't Dr. Seuss. I love this story because it talks about the many strange differences that people have and how people are celebrated for those differences. I always loved that main story lesson

This is one of the most popular and well-known Dr. Seuss books. It is fun and enjoyable no matter what age you are. It is has the common Dr. Seuss rhythm and beat to it as all of the others, but it has simpler language so that younger readers can also read the story. I love this book because it kind of models the chaos that is my younger brothers and I. I am Cat in the Hat while they are Thing 1 and Thing 2.

It makes love reading because it encourages not only the creativity of imagination from closing your eyes to see the story in your mind. But it also encourages readers to read with their eyes open and read to others that may not be able to read. It showcases the Cat reading to a mini-version of himself, which always makes me think of an older sibling reading to their younger sibling, and that can encourage people to read to others and share their love of reading with them.

It took me a while to realize that the child chicken was a girl. The way that the child chicken is drawn makes it seem more like she was a "he" since she looked more like a rooster - a male chicken - than a hen - a female chicken.
I did enjoy this book in the sense that the little chicken wasn't going to let the story characters make bad decisions and worked to fix the fairy tales she was hearing. I also loved the dynamics of the father-daughter relationship that it portrays. I just don't know what lesson the story was trying to teach just by reading it.
Why can't more children change the bad decisions of fairy tales? It would make things so much more interesting.

I originally found this book and thought it was a perfect gift for my younger brother. It would get him to read, but it would also get him to read something that would make us laugh since he loves to do that on a regular basis anyway. The problem is getting him to read it out loud to my youngest brother and I. We haven't figured out how to get him to do it yet.
But this book is perfect for encouraging students to find love in reading books without pictures while also having a pressure-less read aloud story that can be enjoyed by everyone. The whole purpose is to get children to want to read and enjoy reading

This is one of the strangest books that I have read. It follows a witch as she looks for a place to stay during the cold night. She gives out two regular curses and one curse in reverse. She explains that she can't give out miracles because she is a witch - totally dislike that distinction - but that she can give out curses in reverse.
This story could be used to express the importance of kindness to others even if you don't have a lot. But it isn't a very good window or mirror

Both of these Magic Treehouse books were ones of my favorites because they talked about far away places that I never believed had existed.
The Knight at Dawn was an adventure in medieval times where knights were a common occurrence. I hadn't been aware of the truth surrounding knights, but now I can connect what I have learned about knights in literature to the knights that Jack and Annie met.
The Night of the Ninjas was all about ninjas and their codes. I enjoyed the fact that the ninjas were both male and female. It was a hit against gender role norms while it also explained some history about ninjas.

I love all of these books.
The Rough-Face Girl: It talks about beauty as something that is inside and not just outside. It also has a bit of an insight into another culture.
Little Gold Star: It is a story that centers on being kind and how that kindness is rewarded as long as you continue it. You have to be kind.
Egyptian Cinderella: I have periodically seen this cinderella around and I have always wanted to read it. I loved reading this story because it is not only a cinderella story, but also full of myths. I love myths.
Cinderella: An Islamic Tale: Is a window into a culture that I don't know about as it pertains to a story that I do. It is beautiful an I suggest that you read it.

Classic Fairy Tales by Scott Gustafson

The author/illustrator did multiple oil paintings for each of these classic fairy tales. They are all beautiful. The classics are longer, so if this was to be read to young children, it would have to be read slowly and over a long period of time.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears: This is a classic that I was aware of before I read this. But the detailed artwork of baby bear's chair being broken and them all surrounding Goldilocks made it all the more enjoyable.
Puss in Boots: The only thing that I knew about this story was the movie version. I have to say that I truly love the wit and cleverness of Puss the cat in the story. He is smart and resourceful as well as loyal.
Little Red Riding Hood: This is another classic that I am familiar with. I have read many versions of the tale, but this is definitely the longest and most detailed. The art is just as beautiful.
Snow White: I was only ever aware of the Disney version of this story. But seeing the pictures and reading the descriptions that were made in the story, I have to say that I missed a lot.
Tom Thumb: This is a classic that I had never heard of. But it is just as beautiful and descriptive as any other classic that I have read. I wish they would make more of these classics well known to young children.
Hansel and Gretal: I've heard the story of Hansel and Gretal before. I always felt sad for them in the beginning when they were in the forest. I always disliked the witch for trying to eat them and lure them with food. But the art within this story is exquisite and makes me enjoy the story all the more.
The Frog Prince: The only thing I knew about the Frog Prince was what I had watched of it in the Disney movie - The Princess and the Frog. This version is nothing like I expected it to be. It is a good story to teach about keeping your word, and I love the ending.
Rumplestillskin: The only thing that I knew about Rumplestillskin was the fact that he could turn straw into gold and he wanted the first born child of the girl that he was helping. Reading this story, I learned even more than before. This is definitely a story that should be read so that young readers understand the importance of being truthful so that lies don't spiral out of control.
Cinderella: There are many versions of this same story. This is the classic one. It is similar to the newest Disney version - live action one - in the sense that it uses two little lizards as footmen, but it is also different from a number of versions due to the Fairy godmother returning to Cinderella after the first night of the ball as the ball lasts multiple nights. It is a good version to be shared with young readers so that they understand the importance of differing details.
Three Little Pigs: This version of the Three Little Pigs starts out with their mother deciding that her children were old enough to live on their own. It follows the same story line that we are familiar with, but expands on details that other versions hadn't. It ends with the pigs enjoying a stew.

Scott Gustafson's Fables

Scott Gustafson created an oil painting for each of the illustrations in these fables and fairy tales. They are beautiful and worth looking at and admiring the pure beauty in their every detail.
The Ugly Duckling: I have always loved this transformative story about a young "duckling" that feels as if it isn't beautiful before it grows up and realizes that it was not an ugly duckling at all. After reading this story, I have to admit that the statement "They went from an ugly duckling and now they are a swan" - or at least statement along those lines - makes more sense to me now. The paintings make it all the more enjoyable.
Beauty and the Beast: I love this classic tale of a strong female character that is beautiful falling in love with a beast because she sees the inside rather than the outside. This is an important story to learn so that we focus more on who a person is instead of what they look like, especially in our society.
The Crow and the Pitcher: This is an amazing little story/rhyme about a crow that is thirsty, but can't fit its beak into a pitcher of water. So the crow decides to get inventive to get the drink that it needs. This is a story that would be easily shared before we encourage students to look at water and mass as well as other scientific lessons along those lines to get students thinking.
The Emperor's New Clothes: This is a strange story about an emperor that ends up getting tricked into believing that he is wearing the finest clothing. The illustrations surprisingly depict the characters as animals that walk on two legs and wear clothes. It is a story about being greedy and naive. It was a story that I don't think I'll forget.
The Boy Who Cried Wolf: I have heard this story before, and it is short enough for a quick read to students with a lengthier discussion. The difference is that I had never read it with the detail that it provides and in the version I had heard, the wolf ate the boy because no one had believed him when he was telling the truth. This version is far more kid-friendly and teaches readers that it is not good to lie.
The Little Red Hen: I had never heard of this story before. It is a story that could be used to encourage young readers the importance of working hard to get what they want. The little red hen worked hard to do everything that she needed to to get the bread that she got to eat while her friends did nothing and were not allowed to have any.
The Mice in Council: This was a cute little story about a bunch of mice that wanted to not have to worry about a cat by putting a bell on the cat. Their problem was that they didn't know how to put the bell on the cat. This is a good story to get students talking about making goals and figuring out how they are going to achieve them. This is also a story that you could read to ask students to think about different ways that a story could be finished.
The Boy Who Went to the North Wind: This is a story about a young boy that goes to the North Wind to get his meal back as the grain had been blown away multiple times. This is a wonderful story to show that it doesn't pay to steal from others. I loved the cleverness of this boy.

This is an amazing book that has beautifully illustrated actions and characters within it. It follows a young boy that dreams of being a mermaid. He ends up seeing mermaids and decides that while his grandmother is bathing, he is going to dress like a mermaid. It has a beautiful twist that makes the story all the more heartwarming.
This story can be used to look at stereotypes and gender roles in society. It also has tones of LGBT+ ideas within it. This would be an amazing book to look at with young readers so that they can see that they can be whatever they dream of being.
I loved this book so much because its illustrations are beautiful and it shows you the beauty of just being yourself

This is an amazing book to use as a mirror/window into the LGBT+ world. It uses the classic fairy tale of a prince being heroic and handsome while he searches for a spouse. But in this version, he isn't interested in any of the princesses that he is presented with. He just doesn't feel a connection with any of them and he wants to find that one. It turns out that that one is a knight that he meets while he's being heroic.
I love this book. I wish I could own it so that I could look at the beautiful pictures and read this simple story repeatedly. I love that there is a book that shows a prince being saved and marrying a knight. I love the representation in this story. I highly recommend this story

I love these three magic treehouse books.
Pirates Past Noon: This is a wonderful adventure for young readers to enjoy as they learn about pirates while they are on another adventure with Jack and Annie. I loved this book because I got to enter the mysterious world that the author created while also running from pirates.
Mummies in the Morning: This is a wonderful book for readers that have the patience to sit and read chapter books, or young readers that want to take their time and delve into a story. I loved this book even more because it got me thinking about Egypt and mummies while taking me on an adventure with Jack and Annie. This book made it even more interesting to read The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo.
Ghost Town at Sundown: This book gave insight into the Wild West and the lore of ghost towns. I loved this book because I got to dive into an adventure while also learning little facts about the Wild West, cowboys, and horse thieves. This is a book that any reader can enjoy, even if they don't like history.

If you want to learn more about Lions, Polar Bears, and Dingoes, then these three Magic Treehouse books are perfect for you to read.
Lions at Lunchtime: I love this title because it always made me wonder who's lunchtime they were traveling to. I would never want to go meet lions if they were ready for lunch because I know that I could be that lunch. This book is perfect for those readers that want to enjoy an adventure while they learn about lions and where they live.
Polar Bears Past Bedtime: This was one of those nail-biting magic treehouse books because Jack and Annie end up on thin ice - literally - and you're wondering how they are going to get past this obstacle without falling in. This book is great at teaching young readers about polar bears, dog sleds, the Arctic, and the dangers of thin ice.
Dingoes at Dinnertime: I was always curious about what exactly a dingo is, but I never wanted to look it up. This magic treehouse adventure taught me about dingoes as well as koalas and kangaroos that live in Australia. This book, like all of the others, combines interesting facts about a place I've never been with an adventure worth experiencing. This book is perfect for readers that are interested in Australia.

I always compared this book to things that I was allowed and not allowed to do just because I'm a female. This book is an amazing book for looking at gender roles in history and how they may have changed or stayed the same.
Now, I take a critical eye to the facts that this book represents about Ancient Rome and Olympus as I've taken Latin in High School and I can see the factual information as it glides through this adventure.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who's read the previous books and wants to enjoy an ancient time while following two young siblings. I highly recommend this book to any reader. It has a Fact Tracker book to accompany it should anyone want to know about Ancient Greece and the Olympics.

The art is just as beautiful as the words.
The Legend of the Bluebonnet: This is a wonderful book for anyone to read and enjoy as it looks at Native American legends about the origins of the Bluebonnet flower and the rewards of being selfless.
The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush: This is a beautiful and colorful story about the importance of being patient. It follows a boy that brings the sunset to the earth as he had painted it.
Both of these stories could be used in a number of contexts for a classroom. They are beautiful and should be shared with readers so that they can enjoy both of these stories.

Scooby-Doo Your Everyday Hero: This is a small little book that features Scooby-Doo. It is a "box book", a book that is made up of thick, tough material for pages. It is simple words for a beginning reader. This is not the type of book you would see in a lot of classrooms. But it is a book that connects a well-known and well-loved cartoon characters with a printed story. I loved finding this book because it reminded me of my youngest brother - who still loves Scooby-Doo.
Aladdin: I read this book because I recognized the cover as being from the Disney movie. This book is a printed version of the movie, and it would be appropriate to read this book and look through it on an individual basis due to watching the movie. This book is great for bridging the visual, well-known movie to the print of a book.
The Runaway Bunny: This was a really strange book to read. It could be used in a classroom if you were talking about letting your imagination run wild. It is a young bunny that is imagining what would happen if they ran away. It shows a sense of love and care while also great imagination. I loved reading this book because it was cute and colorful.
I Love You So Much: I was surprised to find out that this book was originally in a different language and was translated into English. It makes me wonder if the story has changed due to being translated. This is a book that you could use in a classroom as a relaxed read aloud when expressing the importance of patience and family love. Any number of readers could enjoy this book.

The Action Bible: New Testament (Graphic Novel): It is a graphic novel version of the New Testament from the Bible. I wouldn't read it in a classroom, but you could have it for students should they want it, or they could find it to better understand and connect with the teachings of the New Testament from the Bible. It was interesting and helpful to have that bridge between the denseness of the Bible and this Graphic Novel version.
Bash and the Pirate Pig: This is a bigger chapter book that is better for 13 years old and up. It follows a city boy as he visits his cousin Bash and they enjoy an adventure around a pig that they dub the Pirate Pig. It is a story that I could relate to since I'm more of a city person, so I understood the major shift of going into a place that is nothing like the city. I recommend this book to anyone that wants to read it. It is a book that talks about religion, but it does relate to more than just religion.
I loved the graphics th were included in this book and I was surprised to find out that the illustrator had worked on major Disney movies!

I loved this story because it was heartfelt and I like cats. This would be a great story for students to hear someone else read to them as well.
Jedi Academy: This book was amazing to read because it was humorous, easy to read, and centered on Star Wars. It is a great book for beginning chapter book readers and up to read as it has a formatting that reminds you of a journal and it is in the perspective of a student at the Jedi Academy. It should be read and enjoyed by anyone who knows and loves the world of Star Wars.
The Narnia Chronicles: The Magician's Nephew: This is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. But I was never aware of it because I had seen the Narnia movie - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe - before I'd found the series. I ended up understanding the world of Narnia better after reading this book. It is appropriate as a read aloud or as a book for longer chapter book lovers to find and enjoy.
Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls: Best Friends and Drama Queens: This was an adorable and amazing book to read. I was drawn in by the title because I've had best friends and I've seen drama queens. This story follows a young girl - Allie Finkle - that makes rules about life that should be followed. It is one of a series, but it can be enjoyed at any time.

Giving Tree: This is one of the saddest books that I have ever re-read. The tree gives and gives until it has nothing left, yet the boy still comes back. I always felt really bad for the tree. This is a great book to talk about kindness and not taking others for granted. It could be read at any age or grade level and enjoyed as the lesson is still prevalent as we all grow up. The book is about the expansion of time and the love of a parent for their child.
The Rainbow Fish: I have missed reading this story. It talks of sharing and being unique even if you don't stand completely out in a crowd. I don't like the fact that in sharing his scales, the Rainbow Fish becomes like everyone else because that always reminds me of conforming to be accepted. But young readers will enjoy this book either way.
Where the Wild Things Are: This is a story that I loved to read to my brothers when we were younger because I would always joke that we were the wild things that our parents had to have and take care of. Btu this story does express the idea of being imaginative and learning to be better behaved. This is an amazing book for a read aloud and for individual reading at any age level.

This is an amazing book for read aloud, and you can do it in a science class before talking about the earth. Or you can just enjoy it no matter how old you are.
Hop on Pop: This is a fun little book that includes a lot of rhyming and family craziness. It is a book that can be read by most beginning readers and anyone who loves Dr. Seuss. It would be an odd book to read as just a random read aloud, but it could be used to express rhyming.
Green Eggs and Ham: This is a book that has inspired a number of crazy green dishes. But it is also a story that makes you think about trying new things. This is a great book to inspire young readers and students to try new things even if you're not quite sure about how it will go.
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish: This is a book that I would use with students that need a more musical aspect to learning counting, colors , and reading.

Both of the books that I read are amazing books for beginning chapter book readers. They are shorter chapter books that have amazing stories that follow the fun adventures of twin girls - Olivia and Ivy - as they meet and try to get to know each other better.
Switched: This is the book where the girls switch places to see how the other spends their days. It is essentially the Parent Trap, only it involves one of the girls being a vampire.
Vampolicious: This is the book where the twins decide to have a party. They are preparing Ivy's home for a giant party and getting even closer.
I highly recommend this book series because they are relatable and out of this world at the same time.
