In short, the new methods for addition and multiplication — namely, the use of number lines and multiplication boxes — are meant to promote a stronger conceptual understanding of math, rather than techniques for getting an answer on paper.
For example, schools in North Carolina are practicing the common core math applications.

In my 10th-grade Geometry class, I’m most focused on two standards for mathematical practice within the Common Core guidelines: making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, and constructing strong mathematical arguments while critiquing the reasoning and arguments of others.
In my classroom, students spend a lot of time working and discussing problems together in small groups. Great geometry learning isn’t “drill and memorize.” When students work and discuss in small groups, they’re fulfilling both key standards: they’re solving problems, and they’re doing that by constructing arguments (and convincing their peers) based on logic and mathematical concepts. As they prove theorems about lines, angles, triangles, and parallelograms, they’re not just learning math. The discussion builds on skills that they’re learning in social studies, English, and other subject areas — developing a claim and providing evidence.

Common Core's goal is to bring everybody on to the same page, but that doesn't just mean from different states. Schneider's class utilizes their prior knowledge to construct thoughtful discussions and reasons rather then memorization.
