According to Ratcliff (Ch # 14, page 161), "the sound of closeness -- two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in purest coordination --- tends to escape us because we can't see it". Musical closeness according to Ratliff is a form of musical and vocal collaboration, such as when Paul McCartney and John Lennon of the Beatles sang harmoniously together in the album "Help!" (1965) especially in the song "She Loves You" when they synchronize their falsettos together. The epitome of musical closeness would be called the eyeball-to-eyeball harmony as Ratcliff mentions in Chapter 14, page 164, "In 1964 they reached the mature phase of what musicologist Ian MacDonald called "eyeball-to-eyeball" harmonies. Musical closeness is a way of synergizing energies together, it's a form of partnerships in musical creation where the artists sync their phrasing, rhythm, and beat to create a more profound form of music. Musical closeness goes beyond voices and also encompasses the partnerships of more than one guitarists and/or more than one drummer on a track, when two drummers or guitarists play together play together they play a role to rally and solidify and build a community. As Ratcliff puts it, close-harmony can be exhausting to the ear as it puts very little value in space or alternation (Ratcliff, Page 162).
