I obtained my Early Childhood Education Assistant Certificate and since 2017, I've been with PLASP, having worked in the before-and-after school programs and now working as a full time educator in a PLASP childcare center. I've also worked at Learning Jungle Daycare for a few years, continuing my experience with hands on children of varying age groups.

Now, I am pursuing my ECE diploma in order to enhance my abilities, promote my profession, and cultivate a broader understanding of child development, curriculum planning, and inclusive pedagogy. During my college life, I have had placements that informed my practice and philosophy as an educator. They, along with my passion for teaching young children, are reflected in this portfolio. The following artifacts present my knowledge, development, and commitment to the ECE profession.

As I near the end of my ECE diploma, this portfolio has become more than a collection of assignments — it is a living document that reflects who I am becoming as an educator. Through ECED-3044: The Reflective Practitioner, I have learned that reflective practice is not optional; it is a professional responsibility. The College of Early Childhood Educators states that RECEs must "understand the value of reflective practice and leadership development and how continuous professional learning supports professional growth" (Standard IV: B.3).

Throughout this semester, I've gained a much deeper appreciation of Ontario's How Does Learning Happen? document; I've been able to expand my understanding of Indigenous perspectives using Hopi Martin's Seasonal Pedagogy; and finally, I had an opportunity to reflect on the 10 Universal Beliefs of Childhood Education International. All of these frameworks have encouraged me to view my practice from a different perspective; they have challenged me to consider what voices are prominent in my practice and what voices aren't being represented.

In reviewing my portfolio, you will see how much I have developed as an Early Childhood Educator from my first days as an ECE Assistant to where I currently stand as a reflective, bilingual, and culturally responsive educator who is committed to continuous professional development.

Reflection:

The artifacts in this section provide evidence of my understanding of children's development in various areas, such as cognitive development, emotional development, language development, and physical development.

One of my own artifacts is a song on hand washing that I composed as an assignment for a course. It is simple but an engaging activity that learned children how to observe good hygiene via music and redundancy. It was helpful to both their physical growth (learning self care practices) and language (compliance and rhyming). I applied it in a circle time scenario, and children were collaborative. Sometimes singing the song to remind each other when they were washing their hands.

The second artifact is a record I made in actual life while working with PLASP. I supported a child who was having difficulty leaving their parent in the morning. Within several weeks, I had a daily routine established and gave a comfort object of transition (a laminated photo of the parent). At the end of the month, the child was confidently walking into the room and playing with other peers. This taught me about children's emotional development and the importance of secure relationships and predictable environments.

After taking the ECED-3044 course, I've learned to observe children's development through multiple frameworks. The first framework I studied is called How Does Learning Happen? (Ministry of Education, 2014). This framework organizes development around four foundations (Belonging, Well-Being, Engagement, and Expression) and encourages educators to look at the whole child. I was also introduced to a second framework called Seasonal Pedagogy by Hopi Martin (2025b) that has helped broaden my understanding of observing children when looking through the four foundations of development; Martin uses a cyclical view of development (Birth, Movement, Relationships, and Passing) to show how children's development is connected to the natural world. Rather than viewing developmental milestones as discrete endpoints, Martin's cyclical view shows a seamless connection between different stages of development. I experience this daily in my work at PLASP; a child who was hesitant at drop-off (Belonging) may end up building with blocks for 30 minutes (Engagement) before turning to a peer and showing them their creation (Expression). These foundations are not separate from each other; rather, they are all interdependent and flow together as Martin suggests.

All of these artifacts illustrate how I put my understanding of child development into practice to create supportive, thoughtful learning experiences. I understand that children develop in their own manner and that my role as a teacher is to observe carefully, respond with sensitivity, and construct settings in which all children can develop with confidence.

The artifacts in this section demonstrate my ability to design and carry out rich, play-based learning experiences for young children. I believe that children learn best when they are interested, curious, and given the freedom to investigate through hands-on experiences.

One artifact is a circle time plan that I created for a "Healthy Habits" theme where we talked about topics like hand washing, brushing teeth, and eating healthy foods. I used interactive songs (like the hand washing song that I wrote), props, books, and open-ended questions to encourage discussion. The children were able to connect daily routines with their learning, and it allowed me to see how responsive planning can support both self-help skills and communication.

The second artifact is a weekly program plan I designed from my work experience. The topic was "Nature Explorers," and each day consisted of an indoor sensory activity (leaf rubbings or pinecone painting) and an outdoor activity (nature walks, scavenger hunts, and bug hunts). The plan was built around the children's interest in insects and trees. I capitalized on their curiosity and offered them opportunities for inquiry, language development, gross motor exploration, and creative expression.

The third artifact is my Assignment 1 from ECED-3044, where I reflected on Action 6 from the Envisioning Quality document: encouraging educators to engage in pedagogical documentation. Before this course, I viewed documentation as an administrative task (checklists, milestones, incident reports). Through my readings and reflections, I now understand it as something much deeper. During a placement experience, I watched a group of children spend nearly 40 minutes investigating how water moved across the playground after a rainstorm. They built dams with sticks, redirected streams with their hands, and debated why water flows downhill. No one documented it. By the next day, that powerful moment of inquiry had disappeared. This experience taught me that pedagogical documentation is not about filling out forms; it is about making children's thinking visible and treating their ideas with respect. When we document children's learning, we show families and communities that early childhood education is complex, intentional, and valuable.

These artifacts show that I believe children can initiate their own exploration, that planning should be responsive, and that environments should be welcoming. I aim to create flexible, culturally relevant, and developmentally appropriate curriculum that is rich in discovery and participation.

Reflection:

As an Early Childhood Educator, I deeply value strong, inclusive relationships with children, families, and peers. These are the foundation for a safe and inclusive environment in which all children feel respected, understood, and like they belong.

Being bilingual in English and Arabic has helped me establish trust with families who speak primarily one of these two languages. This opens up communication more freely and comfortably for many parents and gives children a greater sense of security.

When I completed my ECE certificate, I prepared a short presentation on responsive relationships. In it, I discussed the importance of being emotionally present with children, approaching them without judgment, and working together with families to support the whole child. I also included strategies for promoting connection in group settings, such as maintaining consistent routines and acknowledging children's feelings with empathy (see Artifact 2). That presentation helped me bridge theory and practice, and I continue to use those strategies on a daily basis at work.

In every job I've had, I've seen how much relationships matter. Whether it is comforting a child at drop-off, listening to a concern from a parent, or working with other staff members as a team, I try to build trust and respect with every individual I interact with.

In ECED-3044, I reflected further on the disposition of open-mindedness. I recognized that I sometimes default to comfortable approaches rather than genuinely listening to families' and colleagues' perspectives. I am now working to pause, listen more carefully, and be open to different ways of thinking, especially Indigenous approaches to learning that I had not previously explored. The College of ECE's Code of Ethics states that RECEs must "recognize that families are of primary importance in children's development" and establish positive, respectful relationships with them. Being bilingual allows me to do this in a genuinely culturally connected way, not just translating words but understanding the values, expectations, and concerns behind them. This connects to the "Belonging" foundation in How Does Learning Happen?; when families feel they belong, children feel more secure, more confident, and more willing to explore.

Reflection:

Health and safety are my highest priority as an Early Childhood Educator. I follow all centre policies carefully and help maintain the environment so that it is clean, well-organized, and hazard-free. I have completed my First Aid and CPR certification as well as my Food Handler's Certificate, and I apply that knowledge in daily routines such as snack preparation, hand washing, and handling incidents.

I understand the importance of supervision, documenting injuries or concerns, and communicating with families as needed. I also participate in fire drills, cleaning schedules, and safety checks every day. These practices help keep all of the children safe and ensure they are physically and emotionally cared for on a daily basis.

In ECED-3044, I studied the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) in depth and reflected on how regulations shape daily practice. As an educator working toward my RECE designation, I understand that I am bound by the CCEYA, the College of ECE's Code of Ethics, and the Standards of Practice. These are not simply rules to follow; they are frameworks that protect children and ensure quality care. I demonstrate professional responsibility by maintaining proper adult-to-child ratios, following supervision practices, documenting and reporting concerns according to policy, and understanding my duty to report under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act. I also reflected on Standard IV (Professionalism and Leadership), which challenges me to engage in continuous professional learning and reflective practice. This standard reminds me that being a professional is not just about meeting minimum requirements; it is about actively pursuing growth and holding myself accountable. I view regulations not as restrictions but as the foundation that allows children to feel safe and allows educators to do meaningful work with confidence.

Reflection:

Advocacy is a part of everything I do as an Early Childhood Educator. I advocate for children's needs, help families gain access to resources, and work to build a respectful, inclusive community where all children can thrive.

At work, I support families through transitions and share community information and resources with them when they have needs. I also advocate for children by tracking their needs, documenting them in writing, and discussing them with my colleagues so that we can respond accordingly.

During my studies, I wrote a sample letter to parents explaining why play-based learning is so important (see Artifact 1), as well as a concise resource sheet listing local services for parents (see Artifact 2). These demonstrate my commitment to engaging with families beyond the classroom.

For Artifact 3, I completed an assignment in ECED-3044 where I compared three frameworks: Ontario's How Does Learning Happen?, Childhood Education International's 10 Universal Beliefs, and Hopi Martin's Seasonal Pedagogy. This was one of the most challenging and eye-opening assignments I have completed. The Universal Beliefs taught me that "education is a human right" (Childhood Education International, n.d., point 1), yet in Ontario, access to quality early childhood education is not guaranteed for all families. Barriers like cost, location, and transportation still prevent many children from participating in early learning programs. What shifted my thinking most was the Seasonal Pedagogy. Martin (2025b) describes a cyclical approach rooted in Ojibwe knowledge where children learn in relationship with the land, the seasons, and their community. This challenged me to look beyond my classroom walls and consider how I educate children in relation to the natural world, not just within institutional settings. As an advocate, I now understand that my responsibility extends beyond my own classroom. I must speak up for adequate funding, fair compensation for ECEs, inclusive environments, and curriculum that honours diverse ways of knowing. Advocacy is not separate from my work as an educator; it is my work.

Reflection:

As an Early Childhood Educator, I believe that learning is continuous. I continue to grow through courses, certificates, and what I learn about children and families on a daily basis.

I have been trained in First Aid, CPR, and Food Handling, and I stay up to date with best practices in child development, safety, and communication. I also learn a great deal through observing children, collaborating with my colleagues, and applying what I have learned.

ECED-3044 has changed how I think about professional learning. Before this course, I saw learning as something that happened in classrooms: courses to complete and certificates to earn. Now I understand that reflective practice itself is professional learning. Through weekly reflective writing, I practised making my thinking visible. I learned to ask myself: What happened and why does it matter? What assumptions am I bringing? How do different perspectives (children's, families', colleagues') inform my understanding? What will I do differently?

I also explored frameworks I had never encountered before. Childhood Education International's Universal Beliefs challenged me to think globally about children's rights. Hopi Martin's Seasonal Pedagogy introduced me to Indigenous ways of knowing that centre the land as a teacher. The concept of Communities of Practice showed me that professional growth happens best when educators learn together, not in isolation.

I have identified two dispositions I want to continue developing: open-mindedness and responsibility for my own learning. I plan to set clear learning goals, journal regularly, and actively seek out perspectives different from my own. Reflective practice is not just about looking back; it is about intentionally shaping who I am becoming as an educator.
