Created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in 1998, the band is composed of four virtual characters as to remove the face of the music in protest of the commercialization of artists and their work due to the MTV era.

The songs aren't bad, but they don't put enough focus on the actual band members. Instead it chooses to let the main vocalist sing backup and replace the bass and drums with a bass sync and drum machine. Like what the heck, Albarn! If he wants to just do a collaboration with a bunch of guest artists he should do that separate from Gorillaz.

Gorillaz song "Rockit" from their Album D-Side

This song in particular is interesting because it was meant to kick start their "Reject False Icons" Campaign to write said statement all over the place (actively encouraging vandalism) that was eventually walked back and canceled. It shows how the reason behind the bands creation (dissatisfaction with the current state of music) still continues to drive them.

Well that's because each one represents a musical archetype; Murdoc is the rock junky (and overall a jerk who kidnaps 2-D and a lot of the guest artists), 2-D is your Brit-pop pretty boy, Russel bringings in the Hip-hop aspect, and Noodle is just energetic young music. This allows them to explore a wide range of music you wouldn’t expect to hear from a (mostly) alternative hip-hop album such as folk and orchestra.
