To the Editor:

The problem of teen drinking surges through states and is only growing. The young adults that are not legally allowed to drink yet become tempter by social media and other outlets pouring into their brains thinking it will just be a fun experience.

I have resources of knowledge learned about this situation from witnessing and hearing about this situation. As being a high school/college student I have experienced the sneaking out going to parties. Where they have wrongfully turned not as plan. One of my worst experiences was losing my friend at a party only to find her later unconscious heavily intoxicated. As we try and sober her up and get more information from her how she got new clothes and what she did wandering around. The only information I understood from her was she drank mixtures of hard alcohol and drugs. As the morning comes my parents know what we did, and try to get information about what happened and put it as a lesson learned about drinking. This was an experience for me that showed how a fun time could turn into a bad memory. The outcomes could have lead to way worse consequences. There should be more information awareness to drinking and what it can cause and lead to for underage teens. Parents should also tell their kids be cautious of how drinking affects there body.

Teenagers of the world you may think that drinking once in a while may be fun but that once I’m a whole can turn into an addiction. That will lead your life spiraling out of control.

Teen drinking will prevent you from making smart decisions in life. Decisions that you may come upon that you won’t have control over. There are people who may disagree and say it is a way of having fun and no consequences will come out of it. In the reality of the effects a life full of drinking can lead to medical and mental conditions. There is a reason the legal drinking age is 21 years old. Do not put your brain at risk. Think before you act.

Column: Talk To Your Children About The Risk Of Underage Drinking At Every Age

Jennifer Faringer

Director Of Depaul’s National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence- Rochester Area

As summer winds down and new school years approach, consider providing clear, consistent rulers and expectations for your children and setting the stage for ongoing open communication about the risk of underage drinking. This is by far the single most effective way to keep your children safe from the risk of underage drinking. Sharing a no-use ,es sage is crucial, as parents are the single most important influence in a child’s life. Remember children benefit from hearing these messages frequently, with many little talks rather than one “big talk.”

When is the best time to talk to your children about the risk of alcohol? There are messages you can share at every age. Even as early as preschool, your child has very likely been exposed to alcohol, whether online on television or maybe in real life. During these early years, children are anxious to know the rules. They are forming attitudes as they watch family members interact around them. Consider the unspoken messages that you may be sending.
