As the sea level rises and falls, waves will hit the coast in either deeper or shallower water causing it to break differently. Tides are actually waves,  they cause the sea to rise and fall along the shore around the world. Tides happen due to the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun, but vary depending on where the moon and sun are in relation to the ocean as the earth rotates on its axis.
