Mother's day is meaningful to me as i am able to catch up with my extended family. Living such a fast paced life, my own family rarely get to have a meal together or even a sit-down session to talk about our day,let alone my extended family. In my household, Mother's Day is deeply regarded, even more so than the mandatory Chinese New Year. It is one of scare occasion that my extended family and my family get to catch up . When i was younger, i used to dread these social occasions, thinking that they were dry and unnecessary. Especially when i have to dress up according to the uncompromising dress codes from my father. As i age, i realized how precious these meet ups were. New Year is the time of the year for celebration. Everyone is tied to the same mood of relaxation from the long public holidays. Each and everyone has his or her own reason for why New Year is meaningful to him and my reason is simply the fact that New Year comes hand in hand with Christmas. I truly enjoy the atmosphere that Christmas brings. The huge,bright pine tree protruding out of the bland buildings creates a different feel from the norm. It gives me a special feeling that no other occasion has just from the fact that it is different. from light-hearted music combined with the vibrant lighting around Singapore, comes a very colourful festive. Compare it to the colour scheme of Chinese New Year and National Day, which is red, Christmas has a spectrum of colours.  It is very much different from the other similar and repetitive occasions. That is why it holds such a strong connection to my heart.
 It is also held at the end of the year when there is no  examinations, no school and no stress. This gives the naturally tendency to let go and enjoy especially after finishing the much dreaded school days. One of the main reason it is so meaningful for me is that it reminds me of home. India holds many celebrations every year and the most common celebration between the country I was born in and the country I am currently residing in, Singapore, is Deepavali. This yearly Indian festival is the closest link I have to my homeland as I celebrate it every year in Singapore. Although It is not celebrated with as much gusto as it is in India, some of the common experiences from my few times celebrating it back home are the lighting of crackers and other exploding goodies as well as the visits to the family temple to pray for a better year ahead. As I do not have any family other than my parents living in Singapore, we tend to celebrate it with our friends and their families. All these experiences make me feel at home and for that day every year, I feel like I am in India instead of Singapore.

    • Sounds of joyous laughter, bright smiles, the delicious taste of the different flavors of moon cakes, and the colorful lanterns that fill the parks at night. That is something that i look forward to all the time during the mid-autumn festival. On this day, all of us would gather together in the big living room and enjoy the delicious delicacies known as moon cakes. All of us would then head out to the nearby park at night to light our lanterns and fire sticks and wave them around the park, giving rise to the different colors that fill the entire park, giving my family and friends a common topic to talk about as we observe our surroundings.The annual mid autumn festival is a festival that brings much meaning to me as it provides me with an opportunity to bond with my family and friends. Our fast paced lifestyles and hectic schedules have greatly reduced the time that all of us can spend in fellowship with each other, and it is only on this special day can we really truly spend time together without any interruptions.

Although National Day is a time of celebrating what Singapore has achieved, we would not be where we are if it had not been for our forefathers. This joyous occasion is the perfect time to reflect on what the pioneer generation had done for us. While the skies are scattered with fireworks, screenings of what the late father of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, and his team had done for Singapore can be viewed. From a sleeping fishing village, Singapore metamorphose into a beautiful garden city under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew in the span of half a century, even through world war 2. This is particularly special to me as my late grandfather has told countless stories about how hard life was back then and how lucky i was. Chinese new year is an annual celebration that is meaningful to me as it is a time of family bonding because the whole family gathers together to celebrate Chinese New Year. Every year, the whole entire family will gather together on Chinese New Year Eve to have reunion dinner. Citizens of Singapore from all walks of life would come together to celebrate this annual occasion together as one, where we thank our forefathers for everything they had done. The celebratory performances displayed by the younger generations depicts the everlasting national spirit over the years, giving back towards the pioneer generation. Ranging from heartwarming songs to stunning parachute acts by the Red Lions, immense clapping and cheers can be heard from the audience’s stand. I was immersed by the vibrant atmosphere and it definitely reminded me of the Singaporean Identity that I seem to have forgotten due to my busy work schedule everyday. Taking a brief time off annually would emphasize the importance of our nation’s birthday, where we will be submerged in the Singaporean Identity, hence it is meaningful.

 Korean Lunar New Year is extremely meaningful to me as I get to reunite with my relatives who live miles away from me. During the celebration, my cousins and I pay respect to our elderly by bowing. They then give us good wishes with a sum of money. After this process, we play a korean traditional game called Yut Nori in families. It requires strong teamwork to come up with an efficacious strategies to win.   This game never fails to engage all of my family members and strengthen our bond with one another.  We get to interact more with one another as we play our game, making out for lost time.  Furthermore, we communicate continuously, exchanging the series of events that occurred to us. We often share our problems and come up with ways to deal with them. Doing all these are meaningful to me as I can create plethora of memories with my family members which strengthens our bond. Many may believe that Christmas is a religious festival, but despite not being Christian, my family and I do celebrate this joyous season. It is a great opportunity for all of us, to make up for stolen time and bond with one another. As it is a festive day, my parents are not required to go to their jobs therefore all of us are free to be together. The morning starts with my mother and I making a scrumptious breakfast of certain delicacies, such as pancakes with maple syrup and butter. My father will buy pastries the day before for us to enjoy during our morning meal. After inhaling our food, all of us deign appropriate winter wear as we head out to Snow City, where we play with the artificial snow and pretend to sleigh. A hearty lunch is consumed at a restaurant of my and my sister's choice, after which we roam around outlets to buy clothes or other items. In the evening, we eat a small dinner and curl up on the couch to watch a cliche holiday film. Chinese New Year is meaningful to me as my family gets to be together to celebrate a joyous occasion together. My family would watch the Chinese New Year countdown together. We would play card games together. During the reunion dinner, we would all take photos and perform the mandatory custom of tossing the salad. My family would talk about our resolutions for the new year and how we could improve ourselves for the new year. This made me interact with my family and feel closer. As my family rarely has time to eat together on regular working days, this is a rare opportunity to eat together as a family, which is a great time to bond with the family. I get to know my family better as well. The most important thing in our lives is our family as they are our loved ones and will not last forever. Hence it is important to spend time with them and create happy memories, and is meaningful to me.

Living in a different country from my relatives would not only create physical distance but also emotional distance. In spite of the advancement of technology, where I am still be able to keep in contact with my relatives, I would only feel a sense of euphoria being in their presence. As I am constrained with studies, it is difficult to make time to go back to Malaysia and even have a meal together with my relatives. Over time, these restrictions would cause me to feel extremely distant and saddened that I am not as in touch with my relatives as I wish I could. Therefore, when it comes to Chinese New Year, I would always go back to Malaysia with a heart of anticipation and expectancy in meeting my relatives and catching up with them, where we will talk about the recent happenings in our respective lives. Chinese New Year is a time where I am able to make up to the loss of time when I was unable to spend quality time with my relatives. As I engage with play card games, it strengthens my bond with them as we would laugh over each other's jokes and tease one another when someone loses big in the game. Christmas is meaningful to me as one is able to spend time with family. During the year many of us may be stuck in the daily rat race that we all call work. Christmas is one of those opportunities to break free from this routine temporarily and take a break from our work. Christmas also provides an excellent platform for families , especially those who stay further away, to meet up during this joyous occasion. Thus providing families with a reason to travel across the country just to spend time with their extended family. Among all the special events that occur only once every year, like National Day, Valentine's Day, an annual celebration that has always mattered to me the most was my birthday celebrations. It may seem just like a normal event to be celebrated for teenagers, but for me, it is not just about receiving and opening presents, blowing candles, making wishes and cutting cakes, but it is more of the people who i celebrate my birthday with, and the strong signals it transmits to me as a person, is what makes my annual birthday celebration so meaningful to me. 

My birthday celebration means nothing to me if it is without the company of my friends and family. My friends and family being there to celebrate my birthday with me never fails to show me that they have been with me throughout the past year of my life, and that they have never failed to support me in what i wanted to do. Imagine on the day of my birthday, and no one is there to celebrate it with me. It would be pathetic and worthless, would it not? My friends and family being there to celebrate my birthday with me also shows just how much they care for me, which makes me think back on the past years which they have stood by me and never let go, no matter how upset i made them with me, which makes me grateful towards them. Therefore, their presence is what makes my birthday celebration so special.

However, on this day, Singaporeans gather together to put up remarkable performances to display Singapore's achievements. It is definitely very rare to see such a sight. I have once participated in it and it was an eye opening experience. All the different races and religions will gather together at The Float to show their enthusiasm towards Singapore. Initially, all the us are strangers. As time passes, we became really close. I got to interact with the people from different races, religions, ages and schools. This is one of the very rare moment which I can get to meet new friends and feel the strong social cohesion between different races and religions.
