The Cay is a historical fiction novel written by Theodore Taylor in 1969. The novel is set during World War II, telling the story of a young boy, Phillip Enwright, fleeing Curaçao on a freighter. The ship is torpedoed while out on the ocean, and he is stranded on a desert island with an old, Black man named Timothy. They must work together to survive until help arrives. Personally, I liked the amount of tension throughout the book. This is something I read at an early age and really stuck with me.

This book follows the life of a Jewish woman, Edith Hahn Beer, and how she survived the Holocaust. This includes the events that led up to the war and how she was treated in the camps that she went to, many times almost in which she could have died, and as well as what she did to stay in hiding as an officer's wife.

What I liked about this book was what it taught me about the Holocaust and this specific view of someone who survived. I now have read three accounts of people who either survived to a point in the war or those who did survive through the war, and each has a different story. So seeing each in the way they differ and are similar gives a whole different perspective.

- This book is about two main characters, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, underground in a city named Ember, this very dark, corrupted city with no food. I think the author did a good job with the whole story and making it entertaining and not boring.

A book that I’d recommend is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. The main character’s name is Milo, who learns to escape boredom and goes on wonderful adventures throughout the book filled with sound and colors. His adventure begins as he finds a random tollbooth in a package and enters it, leading him on a journey of adventures and imagination. In the fantasy world he enters, he is sent to rescue two princesses named Rhyme and Reason from the Mathemagician’s capture. Throughout this quest he faces many challenges that he has to overcome.

What I personally liked about the book was how fun and unserious it was, as Milo goes on silly adventures that are outside of the reader’s imagination, while teaching the readers an important lesson that adventure is everywhere--only if one looks.

Humanity's last survivors are living in a city where the only light in the world is; everything around them is pure darkness. But with a corrupt/selfish oligarchical government, food rations running low, and the generator running out of power to sustain the city's lights, two kids are determined to find a solution, or possibly, another way out.

I personally read this book in 5th grade but I honestly didn't understand the value of the content that I had in front of me. I like this book because it doesn't have a specific motif or "big idea" that courses throughout the book. The philosophical ideas of the book are like well-done braids: Government, survival, purpose, etc. are all working together to make something beautiful. Even if you aren't looking for an extremely philosophical book series, the story itself was very entertaining, that's how I was able to stick it out throughout 5th grade.

A fantasy murder mystery book taking place on a small island surrounded by a sea full of sirens (mythological sea creatures who lure people to their death by singing). The main character, Moira Alexander, was always fascinated by these creatures and their song, and works to seek out the cause of the mysterious deaths which were supposedly committed by the sirens. She convinced her childhood friend, Jude Osric, to help her search for the real killer, however the secrets they keep from each other may break their new fragile alliance.

I enjoyed how this book had interesting twists and things grew more complicated as the murder investigation progressed. The way Moira gets as close as possible to the sirens by playing her violin and the way the narration describes her thoughts about the deadly creatures kept me engaged.

They pop in randomly throughout the book with witty and sarcastic jokes/commentary. Anyone who likes mysteries, codes, riddles, or puzzles, will probably like this novel! Plus it’s part of a series, so it’s good for your page count! >:)))

This novel features different perspectives of three 13-year-olds who struggle with escaping their homes from destruction, with their only motivation being hope. They all live in different areas around the world, but Gratz does an honorable job of connecting their stories. The book was overall very enjoyable to read, but what I appreciated most about it was how realistically it covered the damage done to the teens from this violence; it introduces a great lesson on determination.

The Giver is a novel about a dystopian society run by the Council of Elders, who literally control every aspect of these peoples lives — from their jobs down to their partners and children — to achieve absolute “sameness”. This book follows Jonas, who on his 12th birthday, or at his Ceremony of Twelve, gets chosen to become the Receiver of Memories. Throughout his training for this very important role in society, Jonas discovers new things that change his perspective and make him question how his current society runs.

This book was honestly so fun to read. This dystopian society that’s so controlled and dull compared to our society really makes me sit back and think about the differences between both societies. Although I read this book like 2 years ago in 8th grade, the whole concept of sameness in this book has and continues to pique my interest. I also found Jonas’ journey/realizations throughout his training for his job had me wanting to continue the book.

Read it!!! It’s so so good :D

The book Unwind is about this dystopian society in which abortion is outlawed and the way to try and compromise that is by storking them which is leaving the baby at a persons doorstep without getting caught, or keeping them until their pre-teen years for them to be unwound which is using their organs and body parts for another person to use without leaving anything to waste. The book follows three kids each coming from different background and situations who were going to be unwound, escaping and running from their fate.

I really like this book because dystopian has to be one of my favorite genres because it’s imagining on what the world could be in another universe. A lot of dystopian novels like this one connect to the world right now and issues going on so I like to see some of that commentary.

Synopsis:

Magnus Chase, a homeless teen, dies and is taken to Valhalla, where he learns of his family’s ties to Norse gods. In his afterlife, he explores other worlds with a diverse cast of characters of different species, places, and time periods.

I read this book after reading Percy Jackson because it is set in the same universe, but you don’t need to read those books to be able to understand Magnus Chase. Something I really loved about this book is that it subverts expectations. The main character dies 50 pages into the book, so the rest of the story takes place during his afterlife, and he interacts with the living in interesting ways. The characters are genuinely flawed and have internal struggles, some of which aren’t completely resolved by the end of the series, which felt very human to me. I read this book in 6th grade, and I loved it because the dialogue and action were easy to understand and fun to read.

This book is a historical fiction novel written in 1931. The Good Earth is set during the late 19th century to 1930s in Anhwei, China. It is about a humble, Chinese farmer named Wang Lung living an impoverished life. He goes from living a poor, peasant life, to becoming a wealthy and prosperous farmowner. It basically follows the life of a Chinese family and many different circumstances, like famine that force them to make certain decisions. The characters are interesting and dynamic, with many descriptions of 20th-century China.

I like this book because it depicts a time in China that was very difficult for everyone. It tells how families and farmers had to adapt and find ways to make living easier. An aspect I appreciate the most are the characters. The main character Wang Lung is a humble farmer who does let the wealth get to him, and O-lan is his gentle and kind wife. The Good Earth can really make you sympathize with the characters, and it was a really significant book to society because it changed people's views of China.
