Choosing the right text for students is important. I wish I had a selection of text including decodable readers at my finger tips. I'm always searching for the right text bc the only text we have for third grade is the McGraw Hill readers.
I also learned to teach high frequency words through text instead of treating them like sight words.

Orthographic mapping is so important and is the key to help students succeed. In my earlier years of teaching we were always told to tell kids to sound it out. Knowing what I now know, I can't believe we were told to say that and actually told students to do this. It all makes sense now! Lots of take a ways today. I love learning about the brain!

1. There is great benefit to orthographic mapping beyond lower el.
2. There is power in teaching students to read words rather than look at picture cues. Prompting students to look for word parts and/or try a different vowel sound provides life-long reading strategies for when there are no pictures.

I have 7th and 8th grade students demonstrating 1st thru 5th reading abilities. This session and the resources are timely as I am revising my approach and instruction.

Too bad this wasn't a full 6 hours of SCECHS. I could spend all day looking at these resources and making a plan to start incorporating some of these instructional practices, especially in a small group setting. I printed the Word Chain Lists and Power Words and wish I had more time to dig deeper into these to formulate a plan.

I am looking forward to using the Chain Words with skilled groups.

Utilizing mapping and chaining of words is something I would like to integrate more often in the classroom. I am slowly using my sound wall as a resource when teaching sounds and blending words together. It is eye opening when you notice the frequency of sounds that letters make that we often thought were simply sounds/words to be memorized.

I liked learning about the importance of teaching the students how to map a word. We started a new word study where we are also showing parents how to help their students map the word at home!

I like that this PD was effective in giving 6 ideas to right now work on in the classroom--use interesting words and vocab, get some PA lessons going, word chains, phoneme-grapheme mapping, suggesting on finding the right fit for books for kids to read instructionally and independently. We have been discussing the use of UFLI and the word building tool with our literacy coach as a part of our daily instruction. It ties in with the High-Leverage Routine for Systematic Phonics Instruction as we build words to provide practice in building and changing them to new words, one sound at a time. (word chains)

I have heard this before, but it is disheartening that for so long in education we were TRAINED to teach reading in a way that did not focus on explicit instruction of phonics and understanding the English language.
