Language tests are used not only for grading but to understand learners’ true language ability. Teachers and administrators use them to decide who is ready for the next level, who needs extra help, or who can study or work in another language. Yet, the real purpose of testing is to infer what learners know from what they do. Since language ability cannot be seen directly, tests act as indirect measurements—observing performance to understand hidden knowledge. The goal is not just to judge, but to discover how well a learner can actually use language in real-life contextsAfter interpreting test results, teachers or institutions often use them to make decisions about learners or programs. However, test scores alone are not enough—motivation, background, and circumstances also matter. Language tests give useful evidence, but they should never be the only source. Moreover, language is always used for a purpose and within a context; we speak, write, or listen for real reasons. Many traditional tests ignore this, asking learners to use language unnaturally. Good language tests, however, include meaningful tasks—like congratulating a co-worker or replying to an email—so learners can show how they truly use language in real communication. This makes testing fairer, more accurate.

It make student listen attentivle the lesson and think some themself about lecture. First we understand is act sequence it means ideas or actions unfold. We can give example for this storytelling or deciptive writing. And when we test our student's speaking skills we should pay attention to order. Everything should be it is own plase. Introduction, main part and conclusion must be students speech. Also teaching style. Genre is communicative event belong to a reconizable process.

Both student and teacher contecst should same.

X-05 group Qobilova Nilufar

I have read some information about measing language ability, its purpose, measuring way, fron measuring what can we achieve and making desicion.Firstly in first pharagraph i have read measuring language ability, these pages tell us measing language ability is that how people use their target language in community for example with co-workers,with their friend or family. And these test result is not only related to learners’ but also their teachers, how teachers performance ,checking their teaching styles, methods, and materials and so on. When it comes to purposes of language test are that knowing learners’ level and grouping them according to their level, finding their weakness, determine it for citizenship. I have seen the example of Ernest Rutherford’s experience but i don’t understand well. Then we can not keep language in vacuum. It is related to communicating with others about different topics in order to improve our target language. In the last pages i have read that we can not decide or assess the student only with his/her test result, we need to take into account all information like their previous performance during the lessons and so on. Because the test day student might show his/her low performance because of pressure or having bad news from home or illness or uncomfortable situations. And language ability is invisible ability we can not see it so the way of measuring it is called indirect measurement.

X10 Yusufjonova Mohinabonu

The section discusses the concept of measuring language ability and emphasizes that language tests serve as instruments for making inferences about learners’ underlying language competence. Since language ability cannot be directly observed, tests are designed to elicit performances from which such inferences can be drawn. The author highlights the distinction between direct and indirect measurement: direct tests require the performance of the target skill itself (writing a composition to assess writing), while indirect tests infer ability through related tasks.

Moreover, language tests are not solely concerned with decision-making about learners’ placement or achievement, but primarily aim to evaluate and interpret language ability manifested through the integrated use of skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Thus, language testing operates as an indirect measurement process, where observable performance provides evidence for the otherwise unobservable construct of language proficiency.

X-5 O’ralova Dildora

Measuring language ability has always been a challenging task because language involves more than just grammar and vocabulary. Traditional exams like IELTS, TOEFL, or school tests often focus on accuracy and structure, which are important, but they do not always reflect how well a person can use the language in real-life situations. For example, some students can achieve high test scores but find it difficult to communicate confidently or fluently in daily conversations.

In my opinion, language ability should be assessed through more practical and interactive methods such as interviews, role plays, presentations, and written projects. These tasks can show how effectively learners use language to express ideas, solve problems, and interact with others. Moreover, continuous assessment over time can provide a more accurate picture of a learner’s progress.

Overall, true language ability means being able to communicate naturally and appropriately in different contexts, not just passing tests.

X5

Saminova Ra'noxon
Language is not used in a vacuum because we do not speak or write or read easily and we don’t speak the same way all the time — how we use language depends on the situation. For example, you might say, “What’s up?” to a friend, but “Good morning” to a teacher. This is called context — the people, place, and purpose behind what we say. Understanding context helps us choose the right words and tone.
To see how well someone uses a language, we often talk about language ability. This includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It’s usually measured through academic tests or general, but everyday situations — like writing an email or having a conversation — also show how strong someone's skills are.
In short, good communication means knowing both how to use the language and when to use it the right way.

X10-group Jo'raqulova Farzona

Measuring language ability means evaluating how well a learner can use a language in different situations. It involves assessing their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. In simple terms, it is the process of gathering evidence about a learner’s language performance and interpreting it to understand their level of proficiency.

Types of Language Measurement

There are two main ways of measuring language ability: direct and indirect measurement.

Direct measurement involves observing learners perform actual language tasks, such as participating in a conversation, writing an essay, or giving a speech. This method directly tests real communication skills.

Examples include grammar tests, vocabulary quizzes, and multiple-choice questions. Although these are easier to score and manage, they may not fully reflect how well students use English in real situations.

In addition, measurements can be formative (ongoing and used to improve learning) or summative (given at the end of a course to evaluate achievemen).

Validity – The test must measure what it is supposed to measure. Reliability – It should give consistent results across different occasions or examiners.Practicality – The test should be easy to administer, score, and interpret.Fairness – All learners should have equal opportunity to show their ability. These qualities ensure that the results are trustworthy and can be used confidently for making decisions.

Once the teacher or examiner measures a student’s ability, the results are used to make educational decisions. For example:

Deciding which class or level a student should enter (placement).

Deciding whether a student can move to the next level (promotion).

Effective decision-making must be based on accurate and meaningful measurement results. If tests are invalid or unreliable, the decisions may be unfair or harmful to learners.

Imagine a teacher wants to know if students are ready for an advanced English course. She gives a speaking interview (direct measurement) and a grammar test (indirect measurement). By comparing the results, she can decide who is ready to move up and who needs more practice. This process ensures that decisions are based on evidence, not assumptions.

Accurate and fair measurement helps teachers understand learners’ strengths and weaknesses, while informed decisions support students’ growth and success.

Language testing plays a very important role in education and society. It helps teachers, schools, and even governments understand how well people can use a language. But more importantly, it helps us make fair and informed decisions about learning, teaching, and opportunities.

There are many kinds of language tests. For example, achievement tests check what students have learned in class. Proficiency tests—like IELTS or TOEFL—show a person’s overall ability in a language. Placement tests help decide the right level for new students, and diagnostic tests help teachers find students’ strengths and weaknesses.

However, a test is only useful if it is valid, reliable, and fair. That means it should really measure what it claims to measure, give consistent results, and be fair to everyone, no matter their background or culture.

The results of these tests help us make important decisions. In the classroom, teachers decide who passes, who needs more help, and how to plan the next lessons. In universities, test results decide who gets admitted or graduates. On a national level, language test results can even affect jobs, scholarships, or immigration.

But we must also think about ethics. Tests should not harm or discriminate against students. They should support learning, not create fear. Every decision we make based on a test should be responsible, fair, and helpful for the learner’s future.

In conclusion, making language testing and making decisions are deeply connected. A well-designed test can lead to good decisions — ones that open doors, create opportunities, and support real progress in education and life.

Profiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL measure communicative competence, diagnostic tests measure learner's strengths, weaknesses. The results of language assessments are often used to make importan decisions. For example, in education, they guide student placemant, promotion and graduation.
