Students most of the time do not really understand what it meant for Jewish people to be persecuted and killed by the Nazi government. Visiting one of the historical concentration camps leads to an extreme but very emotional confrontation with the topic. The students can really feel what it was like to be in the situation of the imprisoned Jews. This is the first step of realization. 
The second step is to learn about the historical background and what happened to the people in these camps to fully understand the historical facts and achieve a critical thinking about what has happened there and why it is important that something similar will never happen again.

In these cases a role play in class can help to activate the students' imagination and thereby achieve similar results as mentioned above. 
When talking about slavery in the 19th Century (Industrialization), for example, a few students can be forced by another student to do work for him/her. Thereby, they see what it was like for the workers in the 19th Century without any laws that protected them. Before Christmas, we make "Puzuri"- the oldest known Winter Solstice decorations and Northern European countries call them himmeli – from German himmel (sky, heaven), having Ķekatas - according to ancient traditions, it drives away all evil spirits.
The children bake gingerbread cookies themselves, then decorate the Christmas trees with them at school's yard so that the little forest animals can have a little Christmas treat too.
We organize fairs where children are selling homemade delicacies.
