This section talks about Eddies love interest, who we can assume is his wife.Eddie talks about how he would often think back to when he saw her waving over her shoulder, with her dark hair falling over one of her eyes, and he would always feel the same burst of love he did when it first happened all of those years ago. That same night he had told his brother that he had met the girl he was going to marry.This might give us a glimpse of who he could meet after he dies. This also gives the reader a bit of a better idea of what Eddie's background is from when he was younger.

The Journey and the Arrival

This part of the story shows how after Eddie dies, he realizes he is no longer in pain and can run and jump without any problem. Eddie shows his childlike spirit by running around the pier. He was so excited because he hadn't been able to run or jump for 60 years, after he was injured in the war. We read about how Eddie explores his "new" abilities again, being able to raise a leg to his belly, and touching behind his ankles, all things he hasn't been able to do for the past 60 years.

First Person

This part shows the first person that Eddie meets on the other side. Eddie asked the blue man where and why he is there, trying to get answers. The blue man helps explain where Eddie is and what he has to do. The Blue man tells Eddie how he knows him, and why it important they talk, as it was an impact on Eddies life.

In this part of the story, Eddie is brought back to a memory of him and Marguerite around the time of the war. Eddie is brought back to this moment in his second heaven because it is a very important memory to him, that teaches him a lesson.

In this part of the story Eddie learns the lesson from his captain that sometimes you need to sacrifice one thing in order for other good or better things to happen. The captain explains that he had been waiting in that heaven for Eddie so that Eddie could forgive him for shooting him in the leg while Eddie was in the burning building in order to save him.

This section talks about what Eddies father was like, and how he affected Eddies childhood, which still affects him and his fathers relationship to this day. This section describes the last time Eddie had talked to his father, which was after Eddie had come back from war injured, and his father yelled at him to get up and get a job. Eddie had yelled back at his father and grabbed his arm after his father had moved his arm to hit Eddie. This altercation prompted them to stop talking to eachother.

This part of the story talks about Eddies third lesson, where Ruby tells him that holding onto anger is like poison, and that it affects you more than the other person, and that he should try and apologize and forgive his father, as Eddie didn't know the full story of why his father had acted like that.

This section of the story is Eddie forgiving his father for how he had acted and treated him during his childhood and later years. Eddie tells his father that it's okay now, and that everything is alright. Eddie speaks to his father about how he didn't know anything that happened, and that he's sorry because he didn't know.

This section is the Captain explaining to Eddie that everyone's heaven is different, and it whatever you want it to be, as everyone sees and thinks things differently. The Captain explains that the war is his heaven because that's where he had his final moments, but Eddies will be whatever he wants it to be.

In this section Eddie meets Marguerite again. This section is significant because she teaches him that even though people die, it doesn't mean their love dies too. Eddie is brought back to the day of their wedding because their love is so strong, that's what her heaven is.

This section is important because this is when Eddie learns that the shadow he saw during the war was actually a person, and she had died because he couldn't save her. This makes Eddie feel horrible, as he knew he had saw something, but he didn't save the girl.

Final Lesson(179-194)

This section is important because this is the final lesson Eddie learns. Tala teaches him about what his purpose in life was, which was keeping the children at the boardwalk safe. He is taught that he did a lot for the children at the boardwalk keeping them safe and happy, and even saved Amy/Annies life.
