If I were Kareem, I would still help Austin, but I would teach him how to write the essay or give him some ideas instead of doing it for him. That way, we could both do well and still be good friends.

If I were in Kareem’s position, I would have turned down writing Austin’s essay. Maybe I’d have helped him study or looked over it with him, but not done it myself. It's better to face being turned away honestly than to win through unfair means. In the end, staying true to myself would matter more than making the team.

2. I have lost my passion for art a good bit, though its probably because the red 40 dyes fried my brain

In the book, Fadi forgave Kareem after he read the letter Kareem wrote for him (in Arabic). I think forgiveness is a really good thing because (at least,) we are not bound to those memories anymore. Personally, I think another kind of forgiveness is to forgive yourself and it helps us to move forward with positivity.

- Theme 2: National pride

In "Kickoff", when an old lady told Jameelah she doesn't need to wear a hijab in America, Jameelah stepped up furiously and yelled "Have you ever considered that I want to wear it?!" then stormed out of the ice cream shop. I think it is a powerful way to stand up for herself, her culture, and her country. Another example is Kareem appearing on the TV news. He was interviewed to tell other people about the negative impact of the Muslim ban. I think both of these actions are brave and prioritize their heritage.

The first is when Kareem’s family participated in the protest/stood up to speak out at the airport. Kareem’s family wanted people from other countries, foreigners, to be able to enter their country, and vice versa. This shows respect and openness toward people from different nations.

The second is when Kareem wasn’t chosen for the football team. Football is Kareem’s dream, and not being selected would certainly make him feel sad, and sometimes even “inadequate.” However, this does not define anything. I believe that as long as you keep trying to pursue your passion, you will definitely succeed.
