Reading is a power and once you have that power you can truly do anything! I allow my students A LOT of choice when it comes to reading! I feel if you have choice over what you read you learn to love read. This is an example of how I conduct Book Baggie Shopping. It is not the only way my students read. Being literate means that you understand something or are able to do something that requires skill or practice. Examples might be using a map, fishing, dancing, knitting, computer coding. A doctor has different skill set and may read a situation differently than a police officer in the same situation. A plumber may see the issue that causes a clogged pipe far quicker than I could. Being literate means more than just the ability to read.
