Mentioning perspective (art size) is so important- When I saw Guernica by Picasso & The Crucified Christ by Velasquez in person I cried both times.
Art field trips are so powerful for urban students too!!  So many museums (due to COVID) are offering virtual tours.

My students really enjoyed the Afro-Latino perspective. 
I found some music artists from EQ & showed their videos. 
One is actually a cardiologist that sings with his son. 
I think my urban students appreciated me making the effort to show those things to them.  Several students are from countries in Africa & doubly appreciated it.
I'll find the unit & share later. 
My interest was sparked by a Netflix movie I saw-"Palm Trees in the Snow"  it was a story about a Spanish plantation owner in the 40's?. Fascinating story!  Not for students necessarily, but good background knowledge for a Spanish teacher wanting to dive into Equatorial Guinea.

LAS HIJAS DE SOL- They sing in Spanish, French & Bubi (their native language). We listened to one of their videos in Bubi to compare/appreciate the EG culture.

This year it was streamed so I got to show short films at my pace...we talked about imagery, symbolism, personalize the themes, the students got to attend the Q&A and write a letter to a director from Mexico.  It really brought the class together because of the themes.  It was presented in a comprehensible manner and totally would do again. They have so many different languages with and without subtitles.  None of my 140+ students ever attended the festival and most of them never watched a film in Spanish. So I felt blessed to share that experience with them.  Students got to vote for their favorite film.  If you are interested for next year contact Beth Steele Radisek.  She is Special Programs Director.
