The leader must identify a problem or unjust practice, understand why the problem exists, create a solution, compile resources, and attempt to motivate a group to help solve the problem.
All of these steps the leader may do themselves or establish a system of people to assist in doing so.
However simply finding a solution to a problem is not all that leader should be responsible for. As Gardner (2000) states, "Some leaders may be quite gifted in solving problems personally, but if they fail to institutionalize the process, their departure leaves the system crippled. They must create or strengthen systems that will survive them."

Ethics as a Leader

The morality of a leader is just as important as their effectiveness in solving problems. As Starratt (1991) mentions, "beyond the ethic of justice there needs to be an ethic of care to deal with the "underside" of administration which includes "those motives that involve racial, sexual, ethnic, and age stereotypes that block the possibility of honest communication." A leader, specifically a leader of social justice must be able to spark uncomfortable conversations and engage in actions that may be unpopular, for the greater good.

Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa was a great example of a ethical and moral leader. Among many great accomplishments, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity which later expanded to 130 countries and is still in operation today. Missionaries of Charity is a religious congregation who cares for the sick, diseased, homeless, poor, etc. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, as well as beatified in 2003 by Pope John Paul II.
Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick was an NFL quarterback that led his team to a SuperBowl appearance. During the height of police violence against people of color in 2016, Kaepernick began kneeling during the National Anthem before his games. This movement caught fire around the league and spread to the entire sports world. Throughout the offseason and training camp in 2017 Colin went unsigned and could not even get practice squad contracts. Many believed the NFL owners were colluding to not allow him back into the league. He just recently settled with the NFL on a collusion lawsuit. Colin was told often that if he would just give up his fight and agree not to kneel before games, he would most likely get a second chance in the league. He maintained his position and fight for justice.

Leadership by Outrage

Sergiovanni (2000) claims, "It is the leader's responsibility to be outraged when empowerment is abused and when purposes are ignored. Moreover, all members of the school community are obliged to show outrage when the standard fails." I believe anger and outrage are both very important factors in leadership when handled correctly. Many civil rights activists have undoubtedly faced situations in which they are outraged. When faced with these situations, many were courageous and acted in nonviolent ways. The power in anger is that many times it can motivate and focus efforts to right a wrong. It can inspire a movement of many people and create opportunities for individuals to become great leaders.
