In my video reflection, I discussed several strategies I use when engaging with informational texts. One key strategy is annotating while reading, which helps me stay focused and retain important details. I also practice chunking, breaking the text into manageable parts to understand the main ideas better. Additionally, I preview headings, subheadings, and visuals before reading to activate prior knowledge and set a purpose. These strategies work together to improve comprehension and make complex texts more approachable. I've noticed that using graphic organizers, such as cause-effect charts or timelines, also helps me organize my thoughts and clarify the relationships between ideas. Over time, these techniques have helped me engage more critically with texts and become a more confident reader, especially when dealing with academic or professional materials.

2.1 Reading Strategies Summary By Janmi Senaratne

In Unit 2, I learned that using reading and writing strategies can really help with understanding both informational and graphic texts. One reading strategy I found especially useful was previewing the headings, captions, and visuals before reading the entire text. This helped me understand the topic more clearly and gave me a better sense of what to expect. I also realized that being able to recognize the structure of a text, like whether it follows a cause and effect or compare and contrast format, makes it easier to follow and summarize. For the next lesson, I want to work on identifying these structures more quickly so I can respond more effectively and manage my time better. I also saw how these skills apply in real life, like when reading instructions, online articles, or even menus and charts. This unit helped me understand how important literacy is beyond just school.

Summary

Tiarra Ferdinandusz

The lesson 2.1 explained to me that it is better to read informational text in a more proactive manner through some of the following strategies including main idea skimming, scanning specific information, marking key points, and paraphrasing of complex- text. One of the techniques I paid some specific attention to was the strategy of annotating that included highlighting important terms, underlining important information, adding margin notes to overview and pose a question. The approach greatly enriched my content grasp to the extent of breaking down some complicated material and maintaining interest during my reading. It also enhanced my power to remember and go through the material effectively. My individual objective with respect to the next lesson is to improve my paraphrasing efficiency to be able to paraphrase information in my own words, which is imperative towards comprehension and evasion of plagiarism. I understand how these can be applied as well in non-school life, e.g. in interpreting documents involving work, reading instructions, and understanding news items in real world life.

Lesson 2.1 in the course explains that informational text reading is a complex process that requires concentration, critical thinking, and rational understanding of various ideas. Annotating during reading, has proved to yield successful results to improve comprehension, and serves as a method that extends the period of concentration and highlights significant content and supports the long-term memory. This strategy will focus the attention on the analysis of the author's intentions and the general message that the author communicates, making the process of reading interactive. As a result, the approach improves literacy by converting passive modes of reading into active and especially in academic spaces. I will work towards improving the skill of paraphrasing in order to enhance my literary understanding in the next lesson. The strategies that are presented in this lesson can be applied universally regardless of whether the activity involves going through an article in an academic journal, an institutional publication or an analysis of media coverage of an ongoing event. Learning such skills will be vital in communicating and thinking critically in different situations. I also would expect that the knowledge of such techniques would further grow as the course progresses.

2.1 Reading Strategies Summary By Siluni Sadinsa

During Lesson 2.1, I understood that reading is not a passive process but it is the activity requiring the critical thinking and connecting during reading. My attention was concentrated on the strategy of annotating-highlighting and writing notes in the margins of the book, which contributed to better understanding and remembering of the material. This strategy helped me stay focused, easier to validate the evidence in written answer and it enhanced my ability to understand. As my personal objective, I see the next lesson practicing of paraphrases in order to be able to explain them in my words. I am able to use the strategies even outside school like during take-home tests, reading work place reports, or to comprehend complex guidelines. This lesson allowed me to understand the relationship between strong reading and writing skills that are crucial in communicating in both academic and real life situations.

OLC4O 2.1 Reading Strategies

Summary

Harini Hiyoda Herath

In Unit 2.1, I learned that reading informational texts is an active process where we engage with the content, identify key ideas, and make connections. I explored strategies like previewing the text, recognizing main ideas and supporting details, and using text features such as headings and charts to guide comprehension. The strategy that helped me most was annotating while reading, highlighting important points, noting key terms, and summarizing sections in the margins. This kept me focused, improved my understanding, and made reviewing much easier. My next goal is to strengthen my paraphrasing skills so I can express complex ideas in my own words while keeping their original meaning. I see these strategies as essential for real-world literacy tasks, such as summarizing research for school projects or evaluating information in news articles. They will help me think critically, communicate effectively, and apply what I learn beyond the classroom.

OLC4O 2.1 Reading Strategies

Haroon Mohammed Ifran

Summary

In Lesson 2.1 I had a chance to learn that reading is not passive but rather an active process during which we think, question, and make connections in the process. I had studied text preview, main ideas and summarizing to attain the most important points. The strategy that I concentrated on was annotation, namely highlighting the main concepts and reading margin notes. This has enabled me to be involved, well coordinated and elevated the process of summing up a lot easier. Personally, I would like to learn how to paraphrase as it will help me clarify the notion in my own words. I will use these skills either in school, reading research articles, at work in a similar instance reading documents, and even in real life when reading news or instructions which must be understood clearly.
