I did research on the theatre practitioner Horton and I found out some very interesting information about his early influences, training, career and achievements and also had a look at his own technique he developed. I know now that he wanted his technique to not be restricted like his classical training was.

This is the Cardio workout from commercial class and I was very pleased as I feel like I have improved so much in stamina and strength as I did this all without stopping and stamina and strength was my weekness as I have never trained as hard before. My progression is vital as in the industry I should have good stamina to maintain energy in rehearsals and shows as they are very long and you are expected to keep up. Strength is essential in Contemporary as you are expected to to hold positions and have good control to make the movements strong and aesthetically pleasing.

I stretched at home as I need to work on my flexibility and I know you have to put a lot of individual work in so I did an hour of stretch. I held each position for more than 40seconds as it only becomes effective after this time. Flexibility is important as it makes lines and alignment look so much better which would be more impressive for a audience. This will make me stand out in an audition and would make me more employable. It will give me more range on movement .

Every lesson we do our coccyx balances and I have seen an amazing transformation throughtout the lessons as I have become stronger and have Improved. This is a great exercise as it really tests and builds core strength which is fundamental for all styles as it gives you balance and control. This will allow you to hold movements and change position smoothly and will make you look strong as a dancer which will really allow you to the execute the choreography properly so therefore will mean you are more employable in the industry as you will be able to do pirouette and have good dynamics.

This is an exercise using contractions and flat backs which really works the back and this is good as the back is a promenant part of Contemporary. This floor exercise is a Graham technique. I was praised as I really elongated my back outwards and Nahum told me to remember to lift my head back as a contract and to keep my head in line as I go into my flatback and you can see me applying this correction here and I will practice this for systematic repetition in order to build muscle memory so I do it better each time.

I spent time at home and during free college periods going through the exercises. This meant that I could really familiarise myself with the exercise allowing my class to move on and progress to focus on other elements. This is one example of me practising a exercise. This is a video of me practicing my fortification as I really needed to work on this. I belive you can see an improvemt from my initial video as I was able to hold a steady position as my understating and execution of weight distribution was a lot better so therefore my newly improved strength was able to balance and maintain the positions throughout the rotation. It shows my good response to feedback and therefore capacity to improve as I have taken what Nahum told me and have worked on it. My head is in line in the flatback showing I have built muscle memory. These skills are good as it shows my passion and determination and makes me someone more people would want to work with.

This is me practicing my Lateral T. There is a clear improvement as I was able to her a lower and more accurate and therefore effective T position. I was able the hold it for a lot longer aswell showing my increase in strength and showing I have control in my leg. I let my body take my leg and also performed a lot more masking the bounces dynamic and dramatic and by lifting up at the end of the T to really get a feeling of sustain and breathe which is a focal point of this style and something Nahum told us to achieve. I also tried to ensure that my technique was good as to be a successful working dancer in any style, you are required to have prestine technique. I ensured to engage my leg muscles and really pull up and lengthen. I went up and over to really maximise the stretch and ensured my alignment was righ and this is key in Horton technique.

This is a Horton exercise which is clearing shown by the exact lines and laterals achieved. This is the video of a combination of our all the lateral and flat back swings we have learned throughout the course of our unit so far. We started of with the simple flat back swings then as we improved we learned the newer versions and this shows we have progressed as a year as we perfected and retained the original version allowing us to move on to higher more challenging things. In the video you can seem that I have aimed to get the suspend and release by bringing the flat back to a slightly higher level giving me room to capture the feeling is breathe and I then threw the weight away as I did the swing which added drama and performance quality to the piece which shows how I have improved as I was initially just focusing on getting the correct placement however now I am comfortable and have a deeper and wider understating of the exercise I am able to work on dynamics and this will help me in the industry because you have to perform the choreography you are given inst we than just doing the moves.

We did the stretch routine from our commercial class as it really works the hips and muscle. We ensured we stretched for more than 40 seconds as it’s after this time that the muscles really start to engage and the stretch becomes effective. I was able to get a good right leg split which is much closer that I was at the start of our term. This shows me working to improve my flexibility.

I have taken advantage of warm up and stretch time in class and have worked really hard at home . I can still however see that I have a long way to go still and will continue to stretch more (focusing more on my left as this is my weaker side) and I will start to do more challenging stretches and hold them for longer as I improve to get the optimum stretch and increase my flexibility even further rapidly.

I have improved so much as I am able to take my body and use this weight to bring my leg up. I ensured I really pushed my heel forward and imagined I was being pulled from both sides and Nahum told me this would really help me achieve a balanced centre. I used my core strength and pulled up from my hip to ensure I have good alignment. I am proud with this as my T is a lot flatter like a table top which is what the aim of the exercise is. My strength allows me to hold this now.

This week I worked on my contemporary freestyle during ILP. This was very beneficial as it allowed me to practice my freestyle which is vital in the industry as in an audition you will be expected to do this in order to really show yourself off and so choreographer can see how you move and how you express yourself off. Many choreographers such as WAYNE MCGREGOR ask members to freestyle and use this improvisation as inspiration when creating piceces. It was also an effective thing to do because it meant that I was able to really apply for me technique that I have learned in this unit into a real choreographic situation as it made my execution look really good which would be aesthetically pleasing.

This is my lateral T exercise during class when we first started the unit. My promenade is extremely weak as my leg moves from the T position and my heel movements are big and therefore not effective. I really need to push my heel forward and use my strength to push my body over causing my leg to lift. To improve I will imagine I am being pulled out by both ends allowing my to be centred in the middle.

This is my Taylor release swings exercise 3 weeks after my initial video and you can see a clear development. I’m this video a I really use my dynamics as I imagined I was being pushed up in the stomach causing my back to contract and I made it really breathy. My position is a lot clearer her and more accurate. I really allow my arms to bring me up off the floor which gives me the drive to really bend and then grow into the release position.

Here I really endure that I use and go through the floor to initiate the swings and this allowed a strong swing. I ensured my toes were pointed at all times and my hips didn’t move so I kept good alignment and placement throughout. I ensured my arms were strong allowing me to have balance and support. My balance is very strong here and after the balance I really step forward allowing this exercise to really move as it should travel.

These have clearly progressed as I am not able to get a deeper more effective position where I can execute the bounces. My bounces are now a lot sharper and dynamic and I have also I have been able to get a lower flat back in each position. When I’m second, I am able to bounce at the point where I feel I am going to fall and this has become lower each week. I really arch my back.

I have built up strength and are therefore able to execute this well however I still have a long way to go in order to do this really well. The leg should stay directly to the side of me so I don’t change the alignment in my hips.

I belive this went well however it looked to placed and this is not what we want to achieve as this technique is all about breathe and freedom and so I didn’t achieve the correct aesthetic and intention. This is a video of my release swings. I received feedback from Nahum saying that it shouldn’t be placed it should just be free and you should let your body go. I applied this during classes and I belive my swings have improved a lot. I now think about throwing the weight away to really get he freedom. I use my head as it’s the heaviest pasty of my body and I let this drop which brings the rest of my body with it allowing my body to really swing.
