Students might focus on the ways in which texts explore the relationship between humans and the environment and the implications of technology and media for society. They might also consider the idea of scientific development and progress.

The environment teaches many about the science and technology behind the story. Being that the period was during early segregation, the technology of the noose plays a role in her surroundings. Being that she does not comprehend what is going on around her, she still sees the best in the space she is in. The way she is living is poor, yet she loves what adventures it takes her on. The science of it all is simple, her being immuned to the way of her life helps her see the beauty in what she has. "The Flowers" shows the brighter side of the hand she has been dealt.

The Flowers by Alice Walker explores the global issues of science, technology, and the environment through Myop's one experience around her home. Science is explained when the story shares that Myop stumbled upon "his naked grim" and that his teeth were "cracked and open". The story points out the physical aspects of the decaying man and how Myop was a little shook at first then continued to pick flowers. Technology is explored when Myop notices debris of a noose, and nooses were a form of handmade technology that were used to lynch those of color. Environment is explored quite a bit. Myop explains that she loves to talk walks out side of her family's sharecrop cabin and liked to pick flowers. Well on the day she found the decaying body, she wondered outside of her normal environment. The story also explores the social environment as one can infer that around this time, African Americans were not treated with respect or like people and also were frequently lynched by white people. The Flowers may be a simple short story, however is complex in the structure and background.
