The Role of Belonging in Adult Learning

Belonging is essential in adult education. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, learners need to feel accepted and connected before they can reach self-actualization. Adults bring prior experiences, and some carry educational trauma or self-doubt.

By integrating andragogy (Knowles, 2015) and transformative learning (Mezirow, 2000), we foster a learning space rooted in love, trust, and growth. Reflective activities, peer discussion, and identity exploration help build empathy and integrity.

This approach mirrors the biblical command to “love thy neighbor” (Mark 12:31) and “be not weary in well doing” (Galatians 6:9). Building each other up spiritually and academically honors every learner’s God-given value.
