This article by Jeannine Stein from Los Angeles Times analyzes an article performed by the American Psychology Association that survey random ninth-grade students from Virginia high schools about bullying incidents they have witnessed or experienced. The article focused on if bullying climates in schools resulted in lower academic scores. The results from the survey showed that ninth-grade students from Virginia schools scored passed three to six percent lower on standardized tests in algebra, Earth science, and world history when experiencing more intense bullying climate. Stein points out that correlation does not equal causation, but a more intense bullying climates are linked to lower academic scores in school. This could be because students who experience bullying are not as involved with academics and teachers may be focusing more on discipline than academics. Either way, bullying is an issue that has been brought to attention and requires action.

In this article, Jennifer McClellan from USA Today reported and analyzed the findings from a report performed by the organization, YouthTruth. The article’s purpose was to bring attention to who is bullied, the negative effects bullying has on students, and what can be done to deal with bullying. The report performed by YouthTruth points out that the most common reason bullying is teasing a student’s appearance and the most common form of bullying comes in person through verbal harassment. The article lists the negative effects bullying has on students mentally, physically, and academically. These effects include depression, self-harm, low academic performance, sleep difficulties and anxiety. Finally, the article gives insight to what parents and schools can do to combat bullying. McClellan says that having actual conversations with students can help to relieve bullying’s negative effects and schools gave implement lesson plans that expose students to the realities of bullying.
