Some individuals may be born with hearing loss, which is known as congenital hearing impairment. This can be due to genetic factors or certain prenatal conditions. Others may acquire hearing loss later in life due to factors such as exposure to loud noises, infections, certain medications, or aging. In some cases, hearing impairment may be a result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

If I were to work with a student who has a hearing impairment in my future classroom, I would strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment. To assist with my teaching, I would need a lot of visual aids, like videos with captions and making sure that there is a lot of writing so that they can understand. Challenges I could face are having them participate in class and with communication. The student with a hearing impairment could bring unique strengths to the classroom culture. They may have a different perspective, heightened visual and spatial awareness, and strong problem-solving skills.
