On our journey I grew the feeling of devastation as I watched what was once our home parish in ash from the fire that damaged our home.

Winter God - Xuanming It is said that the winter god is named "Yu Qiang" and his courtesy name is Xuanming. The word Xuanming means insufficient light and gloomy weather, which vividly describes the characteristics of winter, so people usually call him "Xuanming". Xuanming is the legendary god of sea, wind and plague. When he appears as the god of wind, he will turn into a human-faced bird, with a green snake hanging from each ear and two green snakes on his feet; when he travels, he will bring violent storms; when he appears as the sea god, His body then became that of a fish, but with human limbs, riding a two-headed dragon. According to legend, Xuanming usually lives in Beihai and assists the Black Emperor Zhuanxu in managing the northern sky. Xuan Ming is not popular because he is also the god of plague, but everything he does is to uphold the laws of nature that punish evil and promote good. Therefore, he is also an upright god who knows right from wrong and always uses his own power to defend justice. This helps us to learn more about the Chinese myth.

Angie: Eyes full of anger and power, almost to her madness. The soldier was mad as the other solider just let the Amah eat the left portions of food and that cause him to get mad.

This sentence tells us that the emotions of his body were mad, and that means a metaphor. We feel like the sentence is explaining that the other soiler was not sharing his food to Amah and that is why the soiler get really mad of the other soiler that they are supposed to share their food.

Sterre : As they got closer, they saw how unlikely that was. The stones of the hut were charred, while the remains of the burned chairs and tables lay strewn on the floor. Ash flew like a dying moth.

Even though this looks like a rather simple section, we feel like this expresses more emotion like a metaphor. The sentence “Ash flew like a dying moth” may indicate that she has seen dying moths and that she is trying to connect the dying moths to the “dying” house to show that, that house was everything for her, and that loosing her hut was like loosing a key part of her life. We feel like the word choice in this section is not too exaggerating to where the reader does not understand what happening.

It reminds me of a similar poem which is about an adventure they go on and how they work together to overcome and think of solutions. The poem is called “Problem Solving” by Gail Greison.

It's about someone having a problem but doesn’t know how to solve it because she gets too overwhelmed and can’t speak up like Pinmei, but then someone helps her with it which in my opinion represents Yishan.

I think the main character in when the sea turned to silver is similar to the fairy tale Jack and the beanstalk. I can see connections in how the story starts. In the beginning of WTSTTS Pinmei is living a normal life and she is very quiet. Even if you haven't read the full story it is easy to tell that she will change in the end. Jack on the other hand also starts out like a normal person, but an event happens where he finds the magic beans and goes on an adventure up the beanstalk. In WTSTTS an event also happens where Amah is captured and Pinmei goes on an adventure. By the end of the story both characters change after going on an adventure.

The chapters are connected by the use of storytelling. In the book, there are small stories and folktales in the middle of some of the chapters. These stories are used both as foreshadowing and to give context to the reader. Some things like the storytelling in chapter 11 give some context behind how Aunt Meiya died and why Amah refuses to tell specific stories.

Emmery and Elsa:

A book that we read that is the same written by the same author is called "When the Mountain Meets the moon." In both books they mention the old man of the moon in chapter 2. When the sea turned to silver they describe the old man of the moon as a spirit that is only in the area of the mountains at night. When you look at the moon at night you can sometimes see him.

In when the "Mountain meets the moon" the man is persuaded to be a man who lurks in the night and an immortal master who has a strong connection with the moon. The focuses on both stories are the same because they see the man as someone important and mysterious because of the control and connection he had with the moon as if it was a part of him.

I think the red stone mentioned in Pinmei’s story is actually the luminous stone that the emperor is searching for. Although it is mentioned that the red stone did not glow like the luminous stone would, we don’t know what the luminous stone actually looks like, so maybe there will be a twist where the luminous stone is not actually luminous and maybe the emperor wants it to become the sea king like in the story. Maybe the author is foreshadowing, and that's why they put the tale in because it seems like it was put in the story in a weird place. This may not be true and the author might have added it to prove that Pinmei was the storytellers granddaughter.
