Firstly, stop thinking about failure. Look at the positive side of learning. Care about your studies.

Secondly, be motivated about studying, set a goal. For example, a hidden goal, like your parents will give you a present or money; and the best of that is to make them happy and proud of you. I think this goal is worthwhile.

Thirdly, organize your time. This is what usually students miss, the time. There is a saying: time is like a sword: if you don’t cut it, it will cut you. So don’t miss your time, because it is important more than you think.

What is more, start studying daily. Many students study only on the eve of the exam. That is why they have complaints about “a lot of subjects to cover in examination period”. Thus, don’t leave for tomorrow what you can do today.

Work honestly. Avoid cheating from your colleagues. When Dr. Veronika gives you a homework, do on your own and don’t depend on someone else.

Be enthusiastic about the subject. Strive for the highest grade.

Avoid sitting next to the careless or chatty students or whoever who might distract you from studies.

Review study notes when you have free time. If you experience difficulties in something you can go to the Dr. Veronika office and ask her.

On the exam don’t leave questions unanswered, at least try.

In the computer class work harder so as to finish the task in time. Rely on your work and be independent on your colleagues’ answers.

Finally, be a good role model in your dealing with others. Encourage your colleagues to make efforts to study.

This wallpaper is the result of joint efforts and active collaboration between the lecturer and students in the course of Statistics, 2015, 1st semester. By this work we want to show to the future generation of statisticians that learning is interesting, and foreign language can never be an obstacle for those who want to be successful. 

At the beginning of the course some students were unconfident in their abilities to learn in English. Nevertheless, today they can be proud of themselves: they have learned rather complicated topics in Statistics, took on challenges to solve sophisticated bonus exercises, became familiar with programming in R-Studio. Our students collaborated with each other and were ambitious enough to strive for higher marks. Moreover, everything they have done was in English, like all the ideas about effective learning in this wallpaper, representing entirely students’ thoughts. Some of them are very serious, some are funny but all of them very sincere and encouraging.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my dear students for the job they have done, their diligence, persistence and sympathy. Thank you for the pleasure to work with you. You make Data Science beautiful. Be happy! Keep learning…

If your English language is not good enough, then study the English too.

Don’t miss classes.  Student must not be absent from the university (only for urgent reasons), because there are things which are difficult to understand without a help of the lecturer.

Intensify your studies before the exam.

Organize the time for studies. It is advisable to study in the early morning when your mind is ready to receive new information.

Have lecture summaries, handouts, and recall them before a test;

Make notes on the margins of the book or paper materials.

Divide difficult material into smaller parts and make sure to understand every part;

Make drawings and illustrations on the paper materials, it will help you to memorize the information.

At the end of working day before going to sleep recall what you have studied today. It is helpful to install necessary information into your memory.

By God’s will a student will be strong to develop his educational level, pass difficult exams and get a full mark.

Organize time for studies and rest. I recommend to study in early mornings when your thinking is fresh.

Organize a place for studies. It must be quiet and convenient.

Don’t be absent in lectures. In emergency cases ask a lecturer to leave.

Study regularly and intensify studies before exams.

Don’t give up studies in the examination period, because it can lead to confusion.

Don’t eat unhealthy food and harmful drinks. Replace it with the food full of nutrition, vitamins and minerals.

Look for encouraging topics in Statistics, which you enjoy and that can be useful personally for you.

While reading at home sit up (not in a bed) with a pencil to underline the text.

Study in a session of no more than one hour, then take a break.

Finish your paper tasks several days before the date of the test so as you can have a chance to review.

Go regularly to the library; knowledge is in books, not in Wikipedia.

Know your professor’s office hours and take advantage from it.

Tick off the issues you think difficult to understand.

Request help from the teacher or colleagues to explain the difficulties you experience.

Follow up the teacher’s explanation, write some comments which will help you to remember the explanation well.

Interact with the teacher and participate in a dialogue when the teacher asks questions.

Make a self-test on understanding the material, quickly reread the articles.

Remember definitions and terminology, creating relationships between informational parts, summarize what you have already studied.

Don’t postpone studies until examination period.

Use distributed practice approach in learning. Study 1-2 hours at the same time every day for six days a week to study Statistics.

Study with other students in a community.

Don’t try to memorize formulas, but the idea, concepts so as to be able to apply it later in life.

Practice your skills regularly.

Ask your instructor to emphasize the most useful topics for the future job, enjoy the subject.

Make the study material looking pleasantly (color important information).

Give yourself a 10-15 minutes break upon completion of a subject and start a new one.

Note what the teacher made a focus on the consultation before the exam.

Be optimistic. Enjoy studies.

Be careful about absences. Don’t miss classes.

Among the most important things is to be a diligent student. Love to study. Studying is the worthwhile thing.

Pray for success.

Understanding comes with application. Don’t wait until you understand what you are doing before you get started. Think what you are doing and do exercises. My understanding of the subject has continued to grow. For example, mechanically calculating of a standard deviation will not help you to understand a standard deviation concept. Looking at graphs and trying to guess what the standard deviation is, would be a better exercise.

Interestingly, statisticians work alongside other researches in areas such as medicine, physics, biology, economics, so that provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about a whole range of different subjects. Try to understand the story behind the data, like we did it in classes using data libraries.

You should always look at the data in a graphical form (histograms, boxplots, scatter plots as we did in lectures) before setting out to analyze.

We were given the opportunity to use computer to solve statistical tasks. When you have the opportunity, use it!
