Megan Marshall:

One of the most interesting things I learned about Nelson Mandela's life, was his educational journey. Originally he was attending the University College of Fort Hare, he was expelled though for participating in a student protest. When he went back to his village he was met with anger from the King and demands that he return; in result Mandela ran away to pursue his fight for equivalence. Mandela was seen to have a first wife but due to him never being at home or spending any time to raise his children and be with his wife, he divorced. His second wife, like him was a strong anti-apartheid fighter, his second wife was more in fighting for women's rights though.

Megan Marshall:

Mandela's leadership, I feel started with him being expelled from his first college. Later on he experienced many different consequences to his protesting and illegal campaigning. One of his biggest moments in protest was probably the Treason Trial. After showing his devotion, he was asked to lead an armed revolt. Mandela also gained much respect from other slowly through small things, even if he opposed certain things and it was him against millions, his devotion proved true and his common sense came through while others were too strong headed to face what was the better option in a choice to be made. His leadership could also be relied on, even if this was not the best thing, he put his devotion above almost everything; including his devotion to family and wife.

Kyla Van Osdol:

Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa on May 10, 1994. In fact, he was South Africa's first ever black president. He served as the South African's president for 5 years. Personally, I think that his compassionate heart and sincere vision to make South Africa a better country for all, made him one of the greatest leaders of all time. Although, he may have adhered some critics, the people who were impacted by his wisdom and compassionate leadership was innumerable.

Kyla Van Osdol:

In the year 1964, Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. Due to him and eight other members of the African National Congress leaders' standing up against the the South African government's ways. Ultimately, Nelson Mandela would spend 27 years in prison. Due to Mandela being widely known and disliked by some, his rations of food were even fewer. Also, Mandela wouldn't be allowed any time to see his whole family, only his wife. Unfortunately, he was told in prison that one of his daughters passed away. Those many years of life in prison did not diminish Nelson Mandela's strong spirit, however. He was released from prison on February 11, 1990.

Kyla Van Osdol:

In the year 1948, is when the road to apartheid began to develop in South Africa. The leaders in the appointed government started racially segregating the people of South Africa in as many ways as they could. The goal was in aims to completely separate non-whites from the rest of civilization. Which left majority of the South african people unable to voice their opinions without the government atrociously getting involved.

Emma Bullock:

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18,1918 to a royal family of the Thembu tribe where his father was chief. Mandela's father had four wives, and Nelson was the youngest of his father's lungs. When Mandela's father died in 192, his high-ranking and wealthy family members took custody of him and started to prepare Rolihlalah (Mandela's birth name) to take on tribal leadership. Quite later in life; after his education, time in prison, and leadership; Mandela ended up marrying three times. He was first married to a woman named Evelyn Mase in 1944, then to Winnie Madikizela in 1958, and finally to Graca Matchel in 1998 (on his 80th birthday). Throughout all three marriages, Nelson Mandela was able too be a father to six children. On December 5, 2013 Mandela passed away due to a respiratory infection at the age of 95.

Emma Bullock:

Nelson Mandela is considered one of the biggest leaders in history for advocating human rights. Throughout his life, Mandela has been involved in many peaceful and armed protests against the racial division in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was very connected and involved in political leadership throughout his life, and one of his biggest influences was the introduction of apartheid. Under Mandela's leadership, there was a sabotage campaign made against the government, and Mandela was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment due to this. Though conditions were rough in the cells, Nelson displayed his true leadership skills by mentoring fellow inmates, encouraging them to stand up for themselves and protest against improper treatment in jails.

Megan Marshall:

Nelson Mandela first had a taste of apartheid, on a small degree, when he went to college. He experienced a strong sense of segregation when it came to having to face professors and his school board leader. He did have black professors, and upon them standing up to their white bosses, he learned that one didn't have to bend to the supposed "superior" race. From there Mandela took part in many protests and it soon consumed his life to try and stop apartheid. One of the things that turned his devotion whole-heartedly towards it was when he experienced police brutality in jail. He stayed persistent in his tries though.

Emma Bullock:

Nelson Mandela was a strong political activist who played a key role in bringing an end to apartheid in South Africa. One of Nelson's first exposures to black retaliation of segregation was when he was attending college at Fort Hare. At this time it was common for a white man to give a black man orders, and it was very uncommon for a black man to disobey these orders. However, one day when a white magistrate asked Mandela's friend Paul to buy him some stamps he refused. This was very shocking to Mandela and opened his mind to a world where the black man rules himself and is not subject to any white man; a potential world that Mandela would devote the majority of his life to.
