This can also heavily impact the biases that the student brings into the classroom. This can impact instruction and how deeply you have to dive into a topic due to lack of understanding by the students.

In the beginning weeks of school, teachers and students alike are trying to get to know each other. The typically ice breaker activities that focus on the students are aimed at the heteronormative families where there is a mom-dad-biological children set up. This can be damaging for some students who do not see themselves represented in the classroom as well as those whose guardian figures do not speak English. Making sure that students get the representation of their culture in the classroom through books or expressing their culture through presentations.

Connection with the families (which should be as expansive as necessary for the family to feel included) is detrimental to the success and inclusivity of the classroom. Surveying the family is an quick way to understand the families culture, the family's concerns about the student, what the student enjoys the most about school. The teacher should also make the effort to make the families feel heard in the classroom and like their experiences and beliefs have an impact on the way that things are being taught. The teacher should also make sure that communication can happen in any language necessary as well as in whatever format is easiest for the parent to engage with.

To avoid the push of Christianity in schools, the focus should be on multicultural holidays. Even the push of the "Winter Season" is the dominate group folding all the other holidays into that season of the year. This can provide an opportunity for students to talk about their different cultural holiday celebrations to generate community of cultural learners. It is also important to show understanding about the times when holidays actually occur for different religions. It is important to teach multiple religions as the year progresses because some students might never experience that information otherwise. Some students whose religions do not follow the same solar calendar as Christianity, they might feel left out of the festivities.

The United States is a very diverse country, but the schools are still set to cater to the dominate groups holidays and lifestyle by practicing Christian holidays and demanding English only language in the classroom. There is also the lack of exploration of other cultures in the classroom that promotes the dominate groups believes.

The article is talking about teaching marriage equality to students using Supreme Court cases. Marriage equality is talking about the rights of same-sex couples, interracial couples, or couples that part of both of these minorities. This connections to creating inclusion in the classroom with giving students who do not have the heteronormative household the chance to experience representation in the classroom. This also gives the teacher the opportunity to introduce this concept to students who might not have known that this a family dynamic that their peers might have at home. This can also act a survey of students and their experiences. The impact of parents beliefs can also be seen in this instruction, but the way that the topic is presented and debated in the classroom is important to the effectiveness of the lesson.
