It was also related to the Native Americans and Mexico losing their territory. This was also the settlers moving from East to West, causing them to take over lands like Oregon, California, and Texas. The Louisiana Purchase and Homestead Act were some of the few policies that made this expansion possible.

Western expansion refers to the movement of American settlers westward across the continent during the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by the search for land, resources, and new economic opportunities. This process was supported by government policies, military actions, and beliefs like Manifest Destiny, which framed expansion as both inevitable and justified. However, western expansion resulted in the displacement of Native American nations, conflicts with foreign powers, and major political tensions over slavery and territorial control.

Tejanos and Americans who settled in Texas (Texans) were content with the 1824 Mexican Constitution which allowed for a good bit of self-government. In 1834, newly elected President Santa Anna advocated for scrapping this constitution in favor of a new one with stronger centralize govt (which meant less self govt). This caused the Texans to rebel and seek independence. The US eventually decided to annex TX. Santa Anna decided to ignore this which resulted in both countries going to war.

The Mexican War was sparked by the election of 1844. The annexation of Texas caused Mexico to immediately break civil communication with the United States. On May 9, the United States and Mexico fought in a small “skirmish” along the Rio Grande River in an area which both the United States and Mexico claimed to own. Since this happened, Polk asked Congress for a declaration of war on May 13, 1846, on the grounds that Mexico had invaded the US and spilled American blood. The United States then defeated Mexico really easily, which surprised everyone. -Moose, on the cover of Vogue

The Mexican-American War was caused by long-standing territorial disputes between the United States and Mexico, especially after the U.S. annexation of Texas in 1845, which Mexico still considered its own territory. President James K. Polk’s strong desire for westward expansion, including acquiring California and New Mexico, intensified tensions and pushed the United States toward conflict. When U.S. and Mexican troops clashed in the disputed Rio Grande region, the confrontation provided the immediate spark that led to full-scale war.
