This ecosystem is characterized by the marine life that lives in the intertidal zone, the area between the high and low tide (see figure 1). Rocky shore life is tough the marine life there has to be able to withstand high energy waves as well as regular exposure to both air and water.

This ecosystem has competition because of its harsh ecosystem. The marine life in this ecosystem is always a fighting for the best habitat, food, and mates. Some major abiotic factors of this ecosystem are the temperature of the water, amount of sunlight, tidal patterns, salinity, and amount of exposed rock. The temperature of the water is an abiotic factor because it determines how much nutrients are in the water. The colder the water the more nutrients there are. Another factor is sunlight, without sunlight plants wouldn’t be able to grow. Tidal patterns are important because it brings the food to the shore. It changes an organism’s habitat and is sometimes used for transportation. The most important abiotic factor is the amount of rock exposed. Salinity affects the marine life’s health if the salinity changes this is hard for many organisms to stay healthy.
