In the book “What did you do in the war, mum”? page 41, I read that firewomen did meritorious work and not always behind the scenes. They were trained to help anywhere. “A firewoman is always ready to fill the gap”.

Once again I was surprised by the courage of the women who fought in World War II.

Once again, women were not allowed to do certain works. They couldn't fight fires. Really shocking! There was a song among the firefighters: "We are firemen,

As Elena R. says in another comment, it seems shocking that it these women were not allowed to fight fires directly as well. However, nowadays it also seems like something only of men do in most places. Why?

By the way, did you notice we can see in the photos up to 3 different types of helmets?

I like the picture in which several girls are working as a team to put out the fire. The expressions on her faces show their effort. It is a photo that says a lot.

It catches my attention to read that firewomen were not allowed to be on the top of the buildings and they could climb the ladder as far as a certain height only. (page 41)

I find the photos published about AFS quite interesting. Men and women joined their efforts in equal parts, extinguishing numerous fires and risking their lives for it.

I believe, it is really curious that before the war you didn't get a lot of married women working and when the war came, suddenly married women were being able to work.

As the book "Whay did you do in the war, mum?" says, married women entered the world of work during WW2. Sadly, demonstrating the courage to carry out these works was not enough to have this work recognised. Women were trained to act at any time and place.

I think like some of my classmates. We see in this section that women weren't allowed to perform the main task of fighting fires. I do not know if it really was because they considered women unable to do that job. Maybe they wanted men to take all the merit or, on the contrary, it was a way to protect them...

I cannot understand why if women were able to serve as firewomen during the Second World War, the NFS was disbanded in 1948. Is it because they were not capable anymore? Not really, they were still capable. Certain sexist behaviours do not hold up, they do not have arguments to defend themselves apart from a sexist conception of society.

The women firefighters performed a heroic job, especially when the Nazis bombed London. They used to do it at night. In 1940, the City was bombed for 57 nights in a row (It must have been terrible). The work of these volunteers became even more risky and tiring. Amazing

It strikes me that although women could do any kind of work as well as a man, there was always a limitation. in the case of the firewomen, as Ivy Jones says, the only thing they weren't allowed to do was to be right on the top of the buildings and they could only climb the ladder up to a certain height.

Firewomen had a restricted work, as they weren’t allowed to climb the ladder to a certain height or to be on the top of a building. This is something I can’t understand because the risk is practically the same. Moreover, I found very interesting the fact that the ship was controlled by volunteers because thanks to them the fires could be put out more quickly.

The Massey Shaw – Dunkirk hero

Last year I saw the film "Dunkirk" Even knowing the story, I was overwhelmed by the situation of the British soldiers on that beach. My classmates remind us of the Massey Shaw. This ship was controlled by volunteers, both men and women, and they helped the British troops on the beaches in Dunkirk. The Massey Shaw travelled three times in very important and dangerous trips and rescued more than 500 soldiers.

I agree with Elena R., women obviously did a brave work, but it was difficult to introduce deep changes in a society where the role of women was to be a housewife. They got to take part as firewomen, but they were not allowed to put fires out.

It was a pleasant feeling to realise the women's worth after accepting them for the first time as firefighters. They were in huge danger and took even greater risks. Your country should be proud of having these women fighters.

This role was played by young people (over 18, according with Ivy Jones). They were on duty all night, surrounded by darkness, blackout and no lamps, and they had to go to work the next day, no matter what the conditions were like when they set out for work every day.
