Hernan Cortes, by Mr. Blaine

Background Information: Hernan Cortes was an explorer who sailed for the country of Spain. Hernan Cortes was born in the year 1485. He came from a famous family and his father was a captain in the Spanish army.

Purpose of Voyage: Cortes heard of Christopher Columbus' discoveries in the new world. He wanted to travel and see new lands. He also wanted to make his fortune and fame. Cortes heard of the gold and treasures of the Aztecs. He wanted to conquer them and take their treasure for Spain.

What did he discover/explore? Gathering his small force of 500 men, Cortes began to march to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital city, in what is now the country of "Mexico." Along the way, Cortes found out that a number of other tribes didn't like the Aztec king Moctezuma. He made alliances with them.

Did he have conflict with the natives?
When Cortes arrived to the Aztec city "Tenochtitlan" in 1519 he was welcomed by the Aztec Emperor Montezuma. Although Moctezuma did not trust Cortes, he thought that Cortes might be the god Quetzalcoatl in human form. Moctezuma gave Cortes and his men gifts of gold. He thought that these gifts would keep Cortes from taking over the city, but they just made Cortes want more riches.

What is he most remembered for?
Cortes and his men raided the Aztec city and took much of their Gold back to Spain. When Cortes and his men returned to Mexico one year later, most of the Aztec people were killed by the disease of smallpox, which was spread from Cortes and his men to the Aztec people. Cortes claimed the city of Aztec city of Tenochtitlan for Spain and renamed it "New Castille, or New Spain." Now, Spain controlled the area of the world today we call, "Mexico." Spain continued to expand its territory into the "New World/North and South America."

Below is an example "card" that I created using the explorer Hernan Cortes, who conquered the Aztecs. This is how your card will look, except you will use the information that you gathered on your "chart" about either Ferdinand Magellan or Henry Hudson. You will also attach an image of the explorer to your card.

Background information: Henry Hudson was an English explorer born somewhere in the 1560's. Henry Hudson learned how to sail because he spent most of his childhood on ships.

Purpose of Voyage: Henry Hudson wanted to find a passage to Asia by Sailing up north-east.

What he actually discovered: His first attempt started with a group of English investors providing him the funds to sail from Europe to Asia. But the ice was too thick, so he had to turn back. The next year he tried again. But had to turn back again. The Dutch east India company provided funding for his next expedition. Storms blocked his path this time so he sailed for the new world instead. He landed in North America and discovered new York city. But the British had asked him to do one more voyage, he agreed. Hudson took his son with him and a small crew to find the northwest passage. This is where he discovered the Hudson strait and the Hudson bay. Sadly, his crew held a mutiny against Hudson. So him, his son, and 7 over crew members were set adrift with a small boat. Hudson was never heard of or seen again.

Conflicts with Native Americans: He didn’t have conflicts with Natives at all, nobody knew if he died to natives or mother nature killed him.

Accomplishments: Henry Hudson was remembered for his discovery of New York city and all of the landmarks in north America that he titled after himself. Henry Hudson was also remembered for his expert sailing. He never lost a ship and they would always return to their investors.
