“Sometimes the past can make the ground feel like quicksand”

These lyrics connect to a quote on page 166; “There had been no time to receive the memories he and The Giver had counted on, of strength and courage. So he relied on what he had and hoped it would be enough.” This connects because he had few helpful memories from the past and it made the journey ahead so much scarier. Jonas had no idea what was ahead and  many times throughout his journey he wanted to turn around or stop. He felt alone and worried that he could not keep himself or Gabe alive.

 

“If you’re lost out where the lights are blinding, caught in all, the stars are hiding.” I feel that this line resembles how Jonas feels about how trapped he is in his community, without all of the memories. Jonas feels as if he is stuck, in a community that he doesn’t want to live in, and he’s lost. Lost in thoughts that the community doesn’t receive. Jonas feels caught in a crossfire full of memories and thoughts, that he just can’t explain to anyone. Or, as the song is saying,” the stars are hiding”, meaning his feelings, everyone’s feelings, the just don’t know, or as we can say, quite yet. “I’m sorry Giver, I don’t mean to be so hateful. Or at least not to you.”, on page 154. In this statement Jonas is implying that he is mad at the community and Committee of Elders, for the fact of death for release.

 

“Every rung that lead you down felt so wrong so you found another way”- This reminds me of Jonas and how after he became the giver he realized that everything had been different (chapter 12) and Jonas wanted it to stay that way not be so same. “Why did colours disappear?” The Giver shrugged, “our people made that choice”..... ”Well they shouldn't have!”

 

My next quote is “You had your maps drawn”.This relates to the story because Jonas and the giver had plans but they all went wrong when they figured out Gabe would be released because he couldn’t sleep well and kept the night workers from doing their job.
