All morning I helped Mama clean the yard. It's funny how much time we spend preparing for Dee to come but it never seems good enoug for her. Maybe this time I won't be so nervous an I will be able to speak my mind. But then I doubt that will ever happen since after the fire I've always had low self esteem and i've never been able to recompose since then. As we had clean the yard I tried to think of a way that I woul be able to dress so that I would look okay for when Dee comes. Normally twelve years ago I wouldn't have cared how I looked I front of my sister but since the fire and how I was badly burnt everything just changed and also I could never be sure if Dee was going to be bringing anybody home with her so I do have to dress appropriately just in case. It will be surprising if she doesn't a since Dee is basically a woman now. There are sometimes when I just wish that most of the things that happened to me and my family never happened, I wonder how life would have been then. I got ready for when Dee would arrive i asked mama how I looked... I was clothed in a pink skirt and a red blouse. I knew that if mama was to answer truthfully without holding anything back the answer may just not be so kind. But I knew that mama would never do a thing like that she always seems to know what to say to make u light up inside. Mama was a large big-boned woman with rough man-working hands. But that may not be the same for Dee I haven't seen her for a while and you never know how much she could have changed. Dee wanted nice things she was determined to stare down any disaster in her efforts.

About Ten twelve years ago I got burned in a house fire leaving burned marks and scars, and those reason contributed to the fact of why I always felt insecure around Dee and in general.

I was getting tiered of waiting for Dee's arrival, so I decided to go inside, and by a flick of an eye, there was Dee arriving in a fancy car, As I attempt to make a dash for the house in My shuffling way Momma waved her hand over me and said “Come back it here" in a calm but sturdy kind of voice. I must admit She made quite an entrance. It was hard to see Dee clearly through the sun and that bright big yellow dress even made it more complicated, she stepped out of the car and imediately I know that it was Dee.

She had a man friend with her that that was short and stocky AMD goes by the name of Hakeem O barber

"Hello,Momma " said Dee in a calmful voice, "How you doing Maggie" she said in a lower but

And i hope we can get to talk more.

There is one problem i have with her she always reading to mom and I. Since she reads to up she thinks she is more educated then me.

Dee is almost here, I asked mom how do i look she said i look great. I have on a bright yellow and green dress.

I woke up today in nervous anticipation. My older sister Dee was coming to our "new" home for a short visit, and I was of course happy to see her,to some extent.

Growing up I was always somewhat jealous of Dee...she was prettier, smarter, braver, bolder, more determined and basically everything I wished I could somehow be.

I stood in the bedroom contemplating what I should wear. But then I realised that no matter what I chose I'd never compare to her beauty.

So I settled for pink skirt and red blouse; however, my insecurities emerged and they clouded my mind with doubt like a thick heavy fog and my crippling shyness also reared its ugly head.

So I shuffled slowly out to mama, to see if she approved of my chosen outfit. I'm not quite sure she saw me at first, as she was staring into space (daydreaming) , probably about Dee, when I arrived and I may have accidentally but purposely hidden myself partially. Yet still I called out " How do I look mama?"

I didn't really like it, but I when onto the porch where mama was waiting for Dee. I stood beside the door and asked Mama how did I look. Mama then told me " Come out into the yard", I sligh hesitate before coming off of the porch to reach Mama. I was surprised when Dee sent Mama a letter saying that she planned on visiting and bringin a friend. I had hardly remember Dee having any friends. We all use to live in a nicer house until it had burned down. I had watched the flames as I was gripping onto Mama my dress started to burn into flakes. Dee was standing under her favorite gum tree concentration on the peaces of board that was falling from that burning house. She should of just started laughing and dancing around the burning house. I wonder how Dee has changed now. And who is her friend. Dee finally pulled up into a car with a mana

I told him all about how they live or at least how I did when I lived with them. To me i'm guessing that Mama did change anything from last house I burned down.

I changed my name because Dee was a name after the people who oppress me. Wangro Leewanika Kemanjo is better and Asalamakim thinks so too. I'm also coming back for my grandmothers handmade quilts. She past while I was away. I have heard she taught Maggie how to sew too.

Mama always thought I hated Maggie and she was right. The fire I started made her look even ugly. i didn't mean for her to burn but she did. My figure and everything else was always better than hers or look more prettier. I was suppose to be the only child. Maggie seems scared of me and I want her to be.

When Mama said i couldn't have the quilts, it made me want to burn down this house. Maggie knows how to make more quilts and she wasn't going to do anything with them. "I hate Maggie more now". Mama probably felt sorry she didn't have nothing cause she's too ugly.

Maggie

The funny thing about my sister Dee, Mama and I spend hours and hours decorating so the house can look good to her. One think about Dee is that she never appreciate all the hard work that Mama and I did for her. From now on I will not do things, so she can appreciate me, but I will do what I think is best for me.

I know that Dee looks better than me and I have scars, but all this does not matter to me now because my sister never appreciate me. Dee always care about herself and she did not really care about family.

I think my sister is really spoiled and nobody really said no to her. That is why she is the way she is now. She get what she wants often. She can choose any cloth to wear often. She don't even want to bring her friend to our house because she said the house was too far for her, but to me is a lie. But Mama and I are comfortable the way we are living. I was glad that Mama don't really have any feeling about the way Dee will view the house. Mama is a very strong woman who works like a man. Anyway Dee views the house, I don't care, because if see want to do it the way she likes, she should fix the house in her own perfection.

Mama and I were in the yard one morning cleaning up , waiting on my sister Dee. Dee was really perfect. She was that person I would wish to be like. She had perfect skin , teeth , nice clothes and was pretty ... She's just something I wish to be and look like . On the other hand I have scars on my skin from being burned , I have cricket teeth , I don't dress very well , and I look in the mirror everyday wishing I seen the girl I dreamed of becoming . But there I was ... Again ... Wishing I haven't turned out the way I did .

Anyway , Mama and I were preparing because of Dees visit . Dee was never satisfied with anything we have tried to do for her so hopefully she's satisfied today . Wee to be honest I really don't care about how Dee feels . Just knowing Mama has raised us to the best of her ability and knowing she tried but Dee have not appreciated anything Mama did for her hurts . I can understand how mama feels without being in her shoes . So just this last time I want to make everything nice and presentable so Dee can be impressed and Mama will feel more good about her work .

Moreover , that afternoon when Dee arrived , she had brought a guess over with her . Good thing we made sure the house was looking good .

" Hello Mama .. Dee "

One day Mama and I spent our morning cleaning the yard. We've been cleaning that whole morning because my older sister Dee was coming by for a vist. Of course I was going to be thrilled to see my sister but sometimes I get a little anxious around her. Everyone just thinks she's better than me. Dee is pretty, smart, and has a nice skin tone. There wasn't really much to me. I was dark, thin, and I was covered in scars. I can see why everyone admire her more than me. As I get finished cleaning the yard I start to get dressed up for Dee's arrival. I decided to put on a pink blouse and a red skirt. I wasnt really sure if this outfit fitted my look so i ask mama for her opinion.

Every afternoon, mama and I swept the clay ground clean, then laid upon the cool, heavy breeze from the elm tree. All day, we spent in our own woman cave. Admiring such peace of nature, with a glass of lemonade, I often heard Dee reading such own fashioned, loathing words without acknowledging she might have been describing us. Mama herself didn't understand and I wasn't too average to comprehend the days society held us hostage as "inferior". The rewriting of their constitution was to their advantage and neither one of us. Equal but separate wasn't enforced neither our cultural stimulation. We never talked about ancient days since, the change yet to come but instead mama lived. She always would sing " The glory of God" as she pulled weeds from her vegetables. We were taught from a tender age how to plant and harvest a agricultural background, Dee soon had looked over her shoulder at. "Which side would I have chosen", I asked myself. My day consisted of crocheting sweaters with mama and working in the fields. It seemed worth it. Nobody, I could think of could have been accustomed to her sense of living. I looked forward to her on the hill. A procedure to butcher: tie the goat's feet on the branch on a leveled branch, place a white bucket under his head, the striking cry didn't matter, instead it made her eager, I closed my eyes to the stoop she made along with a huge swing to decapitate. A hard working man didn't have her level of maturity of butchering. Dee and I both loved her physically strong and sturdy. I always taught the look on her face wanted more from Dee. Maybe a working day with her in the field would be nice. And I taught I was more of her child. Since, she had adopted a life of her own in beauty and education an overall acceptance. The hazard of fire diffusion lead to my ugly hair+ ugly face+ ugly skin tone+ ugly body+ ugly self worth. And Dee differed from what I was. That's what the rabid disaster felt me. A difference and complete insecurity within . Going to church was apart of my brought up. Coming home was distress to see the children's piercing eyes and the commotion of giggle felt me have dead. And one day I looked to mama and said "how come I " and she suddenly picked up on my speech and interrupted with her quoting "birds of different flock migrate to different places". So of course I grew in jealously and lots of insecurity. We spent all day in a courage to impress. So need I , but not enough determination , my self esteem clung me behind the scenes not even mama could see my bright colors. Why did I even think to wear bright colors when I'm already much irrelevant. The day of my sister will be visiting couldn't be worst. I was pressured, my mind was never at ease. It was contemplated to just lie down in distress. She was more like caution to my body. Nothing seemed wonderful for such a new day. So my heart poundered like I was running from way behind time. I wondered if had got smarter, or even more beautiful something I couldn't have stand to see. It somewhat made me crawl inside to a point that I was at the edge. She arrived in style and so I hid behind mama what else could I have expected I taught to myself. She seemed even more delightful along with a friend. She greeted us with a new persona Wangero , I couldn't even think. She chased towards the things mama had and for what I taught. I stumbed upon talking about the background history but it didn't even matter. The quits seemed like the main topic but I wasn't even bold enough to stand up for what was mine. I stood behind doors wondering and a bit puzzled and angry. She got everything in life , and I deserved nothing n quilts. I couldn't stand her tempted eager I was boiled over once again only giving her the quilts could be bursting of my mind. Futhermore, I was shocked to mama's conclusion but was warm inside. She left in anger I and I was relieved when she left.

I slowly walked out the door to show mama what I was wearing. She thought it looked lovely on me but i thought otherwise. I saw Mama looking at my scars with sorrow. One day at our old house a fire had occurred. Dee made it outside and away from the house but I on the other hand didn't. I was trapped inside the house and the fire got to me. The fire burned my skin. I was devasted that the house was on fire but however Dee wasnt. She was happy because she hated that house. She hated every house we lived in and she'll probably hate this one too. As I rememeber my remembrance of the fire Mama and I started to go outside. As we stood outside we saw a car pull up. I saw a leg come out the car and I knew it was Dee. I started to complain about her under my breath. Sometimes that Dee just gets me worked up. As she gets out the car she had on a long dress with bright colors, gold earrings, and kinky hair all over the place. She walks up to us saying something but i quite couldnt understand. She had a short man with her. He comes up to us saying hello. He lean over to hug me but i fell back. I wasnt so sure about him. I thought to myself this was going to be quite the memorable vist i thought sarcasticlly.
