The author of this book is Nora Baskin, she was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1961. When Baskin was just over three years old her mother committed suicide, leaving Baskin with her dad and older brother. Her dad remarried three times after Baskin's mothers death. Through those three marriages, Baskin got three more siblings. She now has two boys, one is a writer for Sports Illustrated and the other is a hip-hop artist. Baskin says that most of the inspiration for her books come from her own life experiences and how she felt growing up as well as from what she saw with her children as they grew up. Baskin now lives in Connecticut with her family and does writers workshops for middle school.

The book "Anything but Typical" is centered around two main places that Jason goes. The primary setting of this book takes place in Connecticut. Within his hometown of Connecticut Jason spends most of his time either at school or at home in his room. The second, and equally as important, setting of the story is in Texas at the Storyboard Convention.

Anything But Typical is a story about a twelve year old boy named Jason with Autism. Jason tries to find the balance fitting in when he knows that everything about him makes him stand out. Jason's mother struggles to understand who he is besides an autistic child that she so desperately wants to be "normal". Jason's autism might hinder his ability to speak aloud to others but it doesn't hinder his ability to write incredible fiction stories online using Storyboard. Through the site Storyboard, Jason meets PhoenixBird (Rebecca) and he feels accepted because a girl has never been nice to him before. Jason and PhoenixBird chat regularly about his writings. At this point in his life Jason feels contentment with knowing that a girl might actually like him. This soon comes crashing down when Jason finds out that his father got him a pass to the Storyboard convention and PhoenixBird will be there. As hopeful as we are for a fairytale ending, it doesn't happen for Jason. He meets PhoenixBird he is so overwhelmed and it goes exactly as Jason thought it would, horribly. At the end of the story Jason and his mother are finally able to have a moment where his mother accepts him for who he is.

The target audience is Middle Schoolers and it think that it would be great to have middle school students read this book because it gives them some perspective into the life of someone who isn't like them. This book really made me get into the mindset of a child with Autism and see the emotions that they feel and go through on a daily basis.

The problem that occurs in this story is Jason's challenge with having autism. He goes through his life feeling different, unable to contain his emotions, and seeing how different others are treated compared to him. He has difficulties in socializing with others, but has been given the opportunity to go to a Storyboard convention and meet PhoenixBird (Rebecca). He does not feel like he can go because he is afraid that Rebecca will see how different he is, and lose the chance of having a friend. He also has trouble finishing his last story on StoryBoard because he cannot think of how he wants it to end. All of this creates many problems throughout the story that Jason has to face.

The solution of the story is that Jason overcame his fears. At the convention, he was terrified of being around people, he was terrified of not finishing his story, and he was terrified to meet his online friend Rebecca. He overcame all of this by standing up and talking at the convention in front of a crowd, meeting Rebecca face to face, and completing his story.
