Something that bothers me is that there are not a lot of options to compost here. I haven't seen any around campus or in the preschool I work at. It is important to compost for our planet. Something that we can do to help is to try and get compost bins on campus and at residential homes. We could contact the school and write a letter about the benefits of composting in order to promote bins on campus.
-Carrie

The bricks on campus are extremely uneven, which makes it hard for students with physical disabilities to get around without tripping. Even for people without a physical disability, they still trip. Even though the bricks have a historical background, the college needs to do something about the uneven ones so students can get around campus easier and without tripping. The college also needs to make sure all the office buildings and sidewalks are easily accessible for every student.

Walking around my residence hall, it breaks my heart to see the condition it is in. Especially since McAlister Residence Hall, a freshman only residence hall, is getting a 6 million renovation (look up McAlister CofC renovation cost). I lived in McAlister my freshman year, and it was not that bad at all, compared to College Lodge. It's upsetting that poorer students at this school are forced to deal with bad living conditions at the price we pay for it (basically $750 per month). I made a collage of 4 pictures I took with color coded squares. Green- the 3rd floor concrete that is falling apart, Yellow- dangling wires and insulation?? falling off of pipes, Blue- paint peeling on stairs from weather and use, Red- the laundry room wall, unsure why it is peeling (probably water damage).

I noticed that this mask has been on the ground for several days and hasn't been thrown away or picked up yet. It makes me sad because Charleston is such a beautiful place and litter shouldn't ruin that. There could definitely be more action taken to reduce litter here.

While walking around, surprisingly I did not find any trash, which I am happy about. I decided to take a picture of the trash bins and the recycle bins because I like that the College and the city provide recycling bins for things that can be recycled. Currently my daughter is learning about ocean pollution, so she has been talking about recycling and how we can save sea turtles this week. I like having the benefit of having those bins on campus inside and outside.

There is a real issue of flooding in Charleston. This is a minor example of this issue. This can make it difficult/unsafe to walk to class, the store, etc. This also makes it extremely difficult for students with physical disabilities to use the sidewalks that are already a struggle due the deteriorating structure of the bricks and stone. The flooding not only causes travellng issues but makes the city smell after a heavy rain.

Something that really bothers me is the amount of trash I see on the sidewalks of Charleston. In addition to trash on the sidewalk, it's not uncommon for me to see throw-up and dog poop on the streets (both of which I saw on this walk but did not want to take a picture of). I absolutely love how charming this city is, but it disgusts me how people are so quick to trash it. There definitely needs to be more actions taken to end littering and to clean up the city.

Driving around downtown or even my neighborhood I come across many potholes, which is very annoying and problematic. Potholes can cause all kinds of damages to your car like flat tires, damaged steering, suspensions and wheel alignment. Sometimes people don’t notice it while driving and they go over the pothole while driving quickly which is even worse for your vehicle overall. Even people riding their bike they can occasionally miss a pothole and go over it. That could result in broken bikes and even injuries for the person on the bike.

In my apartment complex they are very strict about picking up after your pet, as they should be, but to an extent of collecting your dogs DNA and testing dog feces they find around the complex. A little extreme, but I get it. However, where I take my dog to use the restroom has a ton of cigarette butts on the ground. Clearly they have been thrown off of someone's balcony. This bothers be because what if wildlife are consuming these? Peoples pets? There is a lot of trash around the complex and I feel they should be more strict or have a better groundsmen. This is only a glimpse of the amount of cigarette butts that are there, there are SO many more.

Walking through our beautiful campus I am so disappointed to see our sidewalks in this condition. It is unacceptable and incredibly dangerous. Not only have I seen people trip and fall (I have also fallen myself), but I can’t imagine how difficult it would be for someone who is handicapped to navigate these walkways. It is unfair and irresponsible to allow the city to fall apart before our eyes. Downtown Charleston is so beautiful and charming but sidewalks like the one pictured are everywhere and are in desperate need of repair. It is time to start fixing these broken sidewalks and restore safety and beauty in our great community.

Throughout the city but specifically on the Eastside of Charleston we see new development taking place at a rapid pace.

Right across the street from my house I see telephone wiring all over the sidewalk. We should all come together to take better care of our city ❤️!
