         <description><![CDATA[<div>President Abraham Lincoln&nbsp;issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1st of 1863. This declared that that all people that are held as slaves are free. This Proclamation was given during the American Civil war and was able to free slaves from 10 states. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1790 the Naturalization Act was passed which granted White Americans limited access to citizenship.&nbsp;This was the first law to define the eligibility for a person to have citizenship un the U.S. This right was important because it was limited to only White Americans.          <description><![CDATA[<div>On July 9th, 1868 the 14h amendment was ratified and added to the U.S. Constitution. This granted all citizens that were born or naturalized in the United States"equal protection of the laws". This also included former people that were enslaved. This was another amendment that came after the Civil War that was put in place to help protect individual rights. This was mentioned in the Second Revolution podcast, where they mentioned that the people that were responsible for passing this are considered to be Radical Republicans.  </div>]]></description>

This amendment says that the right for citizens to vote will not be denied based on ones race or color.          <title>1867 - Reconstruction Act </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On March 2, 1867 the Reconstruction act was put into place. This act became a law after Congress overrode a presidential veto. This act outlined the terms for rebel states' readmission. The bill divided the former confederate stated into military districts. The south was under Martial law for about 10 years until 1877. This martial law has only been used a limited amount of times in the U.S. In the Second Revolution podcast it was mentioned that having the former Confederate stated being put under martial law this allowed for constitutional conventions to be help where Black Americans can be equally represented. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1865 - President Lincoln Second Inaugural Address </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On March 4, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address. During this address President Lincoln spoke about mutual forgiveness of both the North and South states. In this address he was able to speak about the causes and meaning of the war. He states that a large part of the war was the divine punishment for the sin of slavery. In the Second Revolution podcast it was mentioned that slavery was a violation of God's law and one day White Americans would suffer the consequences. This is also something that President Lincoln mentions about his true commitment to Emancipation. </div>]]></description>

         <title>1954 - Brown v. Board</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court ruled on the Brown vs. Board of Education. This ruled that the the separating of children based on race in public schools is unconstitutional. This name was given to 5 cases that were all heard by the U.S supreme court based on segregation in public schools. This ruling was a major Civil Rights victory. It was ruled that this violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On April 14, 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in the Ford's Theatre. This affected the state of Civil Rights in the U.S. because the relationship between the North and South states had become damaged. This increased the North's dislike of the South. Another thing that happened due to the assassination was the rise of Andrew Jackson to president. This is because he was put in charge of Reconstruction, and he was not in favor of protecting the South in the same way. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>On May 20, 1870 the Enforcement Act was put into place in an attempt to stop some of the violence that was happening. This Act prohibited groups of people from banding together to go on public highways or on the premises of another person with the intention of violation a citizens' constitutional right. Although this did not stop the harassment that African American voters faced, but it was an attempt. The Second Revolution podcast gave a lot of detail into the horrific things African Americans faced such as torture, rape, murder, and many other terrible things. </div>]]></description>

This prohibited racial discrimination in public places and facilities. In 1883 the U.S. supreme court ruled that this Act was unconstitutional and not authorized by the 13th or 14th Amendments. This act had little impact on the South. </div>]]></description>

This Confederate surrender allowed for the U.S. to win the American Civil War. This is significant because it leads into the United States Reconstruction Era. As mentioned in the Second Revolution podcast the Reconstruction Era was so important in the United States. This is because we are able to see the shifting of the American Democracy. </div>]]></description>

He is assassinated by a White American who was not in favor of black voting. This took place during a key Philadelphia Election. Following the assassination of President Lincoln this was another large public funeral that affected communities around the United States. </div>]]></description>

This was causes by tensions surrounding African Americans trying to secure their civil rights. This riot continued for multiple days and destroyed some of the black owned property in the area. </div>]]></description>

This is partially in response to the Springfield race riot in 1908 in Illinois. The purpose of the NAACP is to ensure the political and education equality of minority groups. It was also important for the NAACP to eliminate racial prejudice. The NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. </div>]]></description>
