Arbejderne tjente derimod meget lidt og levede under dårlige forhold. De rige fabriksejere udnyttede arbejderne ved at betale arbejderne mindre i løn, end hvad deres arbejde var værd. De fattige måtte leve under meget dårlige forhold. De rige kaldte Marx for kapitalister.
