The Librarian From the Black Lagoon

Author: | Mike Thaler
Illustrator: | Jared Lee
Publisher, Date: | Scholastic Paperbacks, August 1st 1997
Page Number: | 32
Grade Level: | 2-4
Genre: | Fiction
Literary Elements: | Hubie and his class take a trip to the terrifying, dark Library. There are rumors that the librarian, Mrs. Beamster, laminates you if you talk in the library. For this reason, she is called The Laminator. They also say that she bolts the books together, so you cannot even take them off the shelves and ruin the alphabetical order! Rumor has it that the book shelves are electrified! Follow Hubie on his scary encounters of the Librarian from the Black Lagoon, as he realizes that it was not at all what he had imagined.
Personal Response: | I absolutely loved reading this classic book, as I remember reading them in my elementary school days. The imagery and mysteriousness captivated me and kept me wanting to know more. This series includes two other books, The Teacher from the Black Lagoon, and The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon. I recognized the illustrations immediately and the memories came rushing back. It provides a lot of imagery and paints a picture for the reader. We all used to hear silly rumors in elementary school, and this story embodies the message that you will never know if you do not try for yourself.

Sakamoto’s Swim Club: How a Teacher Led an Unlikely Team to Victory

Author : | Julie Abery
Illustrator: | Chris Sasaki
Publisher, Date : | Kids CAN Press, The Limited , May 4, 2021
Page Number : | 38
Age Range : | 5-8
Genre : | Children's literature, Children's non-fiction literature
Literacy Elements : | Sakamoto, a science teacher, gives the children of sugar plantation workers on the island of Maui a hand when they get in trouble for swimming in the irrigation ditches. He creates a cause for these students by vouching for them and creating a swim team. This dynamic ultimately becomes a very serious practice, and the swim team practices and practices until they make it into the Olympic Games. This was Sakamoto's dream, and his team makes him very proud. One of his swimmers, Bill Smith, won two olympic medals in the 1948 London Games. Sakamoto gave these children reason for a greater purpose, and they inspired him to become the best teacher / coach he could be.
Personal Response : | I really enjoyed reading this book, because I have done swim for almost 8 years of my life. It was the first sport that I really fell in love with and became very invested in. The heartwarming story reminded me of the joy swimming would bring me, and seeing the proud look on my coaches and teammates faces. The rhyming nature of this piece of literature makes it a very easy, engaging read. The unique illustrations are very beautifully created and incorporate fun colors and styles.

He is very hungry, and is very annoyed by the narrator who keeps following him and misperceiving him as a scary mean alligator. It is filled with alliteration, powerful diction, and has a very creative play on point of view. This book is all about perspective, and how that can completely change the tone of the story.
Personal Response:| This piece of literature was a very fun and entertaining read, for both children and adults alike.
