"Write about how Unit 1 went for you - the good, the bad, etc. Reflect on what you want to 'bring' into Unit 2 with you."

This papelito was kept safe, mainly because it represents my roots. The two locations that I chose to observe were both located in South Tucson; I had a deep connection with La Estrella Bakery prior to closely analyzing, while the mural held no great significance to me. Visiting both locations allowed me to reminisce on my childhood, and remember where I grew up, in a way, through visiting businesses, driving down the road, and stopping to look at the art displayed on every left and right turn. After Unit 1, I was in a healthy mental space and I felt as though I was able to prioritize and organize assignments to the best of my ability. I chose to share this papelito because it reminds me that I am able to finish assignments in a timely manner, if I organize and plan ahead of time. I acted upon the course goal 5C in my papelito, by reflecting on the past unit (unit 1) as well as understanding what works and doesn’t work for me in regards to future assignments.

"Now is a good time to think about your personal context from the Borderlands lens we've discussed all semester. What are your borderlands? What is your nepantla?"

This papelito was guarded because I felt as if I was the only one who understood what my nepantla truly meant to me. I, often, don’t connect as easily with other students who live on campus and I don’t connect with my mom either (in terms of school), as she doesn’t commute to and from campus everyday. My mental space, when I wrote this, was in a neutral space; I actually really enjoy driving but sometimes, I do feel like I don’t have many friends because I’m always driving to one place from another. The map coordinates I chose for this papelito was more vague because as I drive down different roads everyday, I mostly always drive down W Valencia Rd as it’s the fastest way to get to my house. I want to share this papelito now because I’ve grown comfortable with the fact that I do commute and rather than complaining, I’ve chosen to highlight the things I do enjoy most about driving. I acted and reflected upon the course goal 7B; I was able to understand LatinX knowledge such as the term “nepantla” and incorporate that knowledge into my own writing and personal life.

"Respond to the video of Rigoberta Menchu. What did she say that resonated with you? What does her view of "education" help you understand about your own path of learning? And how might she, as a Nobel Peace Prize Winner, be a model to you and your future goals?"

This papelito was the most guarded and kept safe out of the three that I’ve included, mainly due to the fact that this papelito includes some of my most vulnerable thoughts. The mental space that I was and am currently in has been feeling constantly stressed and overwhelmed. I mentioned my dreams of moving out of Tucson after I graduate college (which is why I included the map coordinates of campus, to represent where I am physically right now), in hopes of attending medical school but I am immediately filled with guilt as I think of leaving home. I chose to share this papelito because I wanted to include the various emotions I have felt throughout the semester, which includes both the positive and negative. My papelito didn’t seem to be directly connected to any of the course goals, I would say it connected somewhat to goal 5 but not to any of the letters associated with goal 5. However, this papelito did help me connect with a more personal goal which is being more open and expressive. I tend to bottle up my thoughts but this writing activity allowed me to share my thoughts in a judgment and stress free way.

Being able to experience the mural crosswalks in person was, definitely, the highlight of this assignment. The map coordinates of Mi Nidito Restaurant represent where I parked, and helped signify the awe I was in as I was walking up to the crosswalks and the mural. Prior to this unit, I had never taken much time to appreciate the artwork that I drive past daily. This made my writing process flow much smoother because I was able to view and analyze the art in real time rather than looking at photos. The purpose of this assignment was to focus on sensory details that would be of use to my digital storytelling project. For future writing and research projects, I found that having enough time to research and view the art multiple times helped me feel less overwhelmed with the work, and allowed me to enjoy the process.

The purpose of this assignment was to tell a story through a place, where the readers can understand both through a sensory and placekeeping perspective. I found the drafting process fairly enjoyable as I was able to reminisce of when I was younger, as well as recognizing those core memories that I seemed to have had tucked into the back of my mind. I now understand the importance of genres, for future writing experiences, I want to dive deeper into a more creative process as I tend to only write academic pieces. While I was writing this profile essay, I jotted down every idea I had and then revised at a later time, which I found was incredibly helpful in the composing process. Normally, I try to write and revise at the same time which tends to take me a lot longer, I will follow the process of writing then revising for future assignments.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18IV0vUn60aGLsM-YfPnHtyJYBwjhdEaW?usp=sharing

The purpose of this close reading/ rhetorical analysis assignment was to read and examine similar genres, which students can then model the text as they begin writing their own academic piece. When I first started writing, I felt overwhelmed and felt as if I was experiencing “writer’s block” but once I read through my mentor text two or three times, I was able to recognize what I wanted and didn’t want to mimic in my own borderlands place profile. For future writing and research assignments, I need to plan out enough time to read through the texts multiple times, research different articles to find which will work best for my assignment, as well as having enough time to draft and revise. I tend to wait till the last minute, or try to finish everything in one day so a goal of mine would be to make enough time in order to prioritize each step in my writing process.

After my synchronous workshop, I felt much more confident about my story map going forward. Though my peers weren’t able to give me feedback on my storymap, I felt a positive and encouraging environment while we were discussing each other’s story maps and fotonovelas. The feedback from my instructor allowed me to understand what worked and didn’t work, in terms of making things make sense for my audience. For my revision, I chose to emphasize the significance of the intersection where the mural and crosswalks are located by talking about the nearby businesses and the way the street on 4th avenue is built wavy rather than straight down. I also changed my voice to 1st person, which allows me to showcase my personality through the story map rather than writing as if it were an article or from a news outlet. For future workshops, I think it’s important to have everyone share at least one idea of revision, rather than only praising everyone’s work. I know it can be awkward offering revision to others however, it is incredibly helpful.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1XkDe_FCwN44yopQpfNtVj07XgmEWh4jj?usp=sharing
