AFTER watching the 2 videos, post a THOUGHT, a QUESTION, or an EPIPHANY here. How is your research helping you EMPATHIZE with the HUMANS AFFECTED BY YOUR PROBLEM?

I really like how in the animated video the narrator phrases empathy as feeling with someone, and how she said that an empathetic response shouldn't start with "at least."

I thought that the videos did a good job of illustrating the difference between feeling sympathetic and empathetic towards others. Sympathy is almost like telling a person who's going through dark times "wow that sucks hope it gets better," sympathy also uses silver linings to down play the issue affecting the person. On the other hand empathy is understanding the persons problem, putting yourself in their shoes, and helping them find a solution.

The first (animated) video really made me realize that, at least in my experience with this project so far, that it's easy to get lost in the research/information and forget that real people are being affected by these issues on the daily. I have to remember that the best solution to any design thinking challenge is one that benefits those affected first and foremost, aside from whatever biases I have going in.
As with the second video, it's important to remember that our solutions are designed to improve situations for real people in Los Angeles, and that we have to have compassion and empathy in order to create these solutions.

For our projects we have to be able to engage on a whole different level. Lots of my thoughts may have been surface level, but in order to pass the empathize stage in our designed thinking we need to look further and connect on a deeper level.

In this stage of design thinking, it's easy to get lost in the collection of data and facts. We can often forget the emotion and needs behind the whole purpose of this project if we forget that we are trying to help actual human beings. We have to show empathy and actually care in order for our help to be authentic, rather than being sympathetic where we understand the problem. Whereas empathy allows us to experience others emotions in a more first-hand perspective rather than an outside perspective.
-Alyssa Lugo

In the animated video, in the beginning, the narrator says, "empathy fuels connection, sympathy drives disconnection". This saying has helped me better distinguish the two. Before, I didn't understand AS MUCH the difference between the importance of the article and the importance of the interview, but after this it is more clear to me how effective an interview can be, as it gives us that real life example where it will be easier to step into their shoes.

Empathy is an essential feeling one must have to try and better understand others perspectives. Without this we will feel disconnected from the topic at hand thus creating a gap between us the viewer and they the victim. When telling a story or writing a paper we must use compelling evidence or plot lines that make us empathize or even sympathize with the character or people in our world.
