The first thing that I try to do with every student is to build a relationship with each student. This helps me understand them better along with getting to know what they are interested in and what career they are looking into. As I go through my units and lessons I try to find ways to help them connect what they are learning and how this will benefit them in their careers. They also understand that not every math concept is going to be used in their daily lives but the process of learning and following directions is very important. As I get more familiar with the content I will try to start to relate more projects to their interests.

When it comes to building relationships I believe that is the most important thing between a student and a teacher. You have a very short amount of time to find out what makes a kid "tick" outside your class and when you do you need to find some common ground. It could be the most uninteresting thing you could possibly think of but it is important to the student so it is somewhat important to you if you want a chance to make a breakthrough. WIth you colleagues it is simple you need to build a bond, because this profession is not easy and we need each other. I think coming together at different events, taking opportunities to do things together no matter what it is. Spending time in lunch and building a teacher community to attack this job everyday.

I believe as a teaching community our goals have to be common to seek any form of innovation. The part the makes us unique is the style in which we will get there. Coming from Florida we seemed to never be on the same page when it came to teacher, district and community and I think this hurt us because we were tugging in different directions. I think TK is a special place that for the most part has all three going in the same direction with support. I think that we can continue to innovate by continuing to look for opportunities to grow together in those common goals.
