Trust vs Mistrust. This stage happens from birth to 18 months and a child is completely dependent on a parent. A child who is raised with support and understanding will view the world as safe and stable whereas a child who is not will view the world as unpredictable and scary.

For me, this also happened at around my first year or two of life. My mother says as an infant I was very explorative while learning to walk and felt that I couldn't get hurt no matter how hard I played. I think at this point in my life I was being raised with a lot of support and unconditional love and I felt that I was completely safe.

Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt. This stage in development is usually where children will become a little less dependent on their parents to do basic activities such as feeding, but still need direction for complex tasks.

For this stage, one example that I can think of is only from stories from my mother because I was so young. But, I was trying very hard as a toddler to get the Dora the Explorer backpack toy that I had gotten for Christmas out of the box. I was told I sat on the box, stomped it and threw the box trying to get it open before my mother stepped in and opened it for me.

Initiative vs guilt. In this stage children are around the preschool age. In this stage children like to take control of play and be leaders in a sense. A child who fails to acquire this skill may feel guilty, or have a lot of self doubt.

For me, while growing up I was not a leader. I was very, very shy and I did feel guilty for not taking charge. I felt that I was doing something wrong while I played with the other kids. I was often solo playing as a preschooler.

Industry vs Inferiority. This stage happens at their early school years, children usually develop their sense of pride through accomplishments and abilities. A child who does not develop their pride in this way will most likely doubt their ability to be successful.

In my life, I was very prideful of being good with academics and with my art. I was always so happy to share my drawings and paintings with my parents and they were always so excited to get a new picture from me. I was encouraged heavily from my mom to continue to pursue art because of this.

Identity vs Confusion. At this stage in development a child is nearing or right in their teenage years. This stage is usually where a child will develop their sense of identity that will influence them for the rest of their life. This is where the child will develop their ego identity, their conscious sense of self. This stage guides our ideals, beliefs and actions as we get older. Our text says "Crisis, within the context of Erikson’s theories, does not refer to a stressful event such as losing your job or not being able to pay your bills. Rather, it refers to the process of actively grappling with what to believe and who to be." Martorell, G. (2022).
I can remember as I entered my early teens going through the crisis stage, phases of things that I believed were so "me." I was "gangster," I was "quirky," I was a "Metal-head." I went through so many arbitrary identifying characteristics of personality and I had a few romantic relationships that were a part of figuring out who I was as an individual. My mom remembers that around 15 or 16 hearing the classic "it's not a phase, mom!" Quite often from me as I was finding who I was.

Intimacy vs Isolation. Young adults need intimate relationships in their life. Success leads to strong relationships and failure leads to loneliness and isolation. This happens around the early adulthood stage.

I am in this stage right now. I am 24, I have a great loving relationship some of my family and with my partner, I am doing well at work and with school and I think I'm on the path of being successful in the things I want to accomplish.

Generativity vs Stagnation. At this stage, adults acquire the need to nurture and create things. This is the stage in development that adults will decide to have children of their own. An adult who does not succeed in this will most likely be less invested in the world where as an adult who does succeed will be more invested in the world.

I am not at this stage of development yet, but my mother was ready for and at this stage when she was 21. She recalls that she was always naturally great with kids and when she and my father got married they were more than ready to start their own family. I think that I may be on the latter side of this stage. I think that I won't ever feel the need to want children of my own, only time will tell but at this point I don't feel that's something I want for myself.

Integrity vs Despair. This stage of development usually occurs when an adult reaches old age. This is usually where an adult will look back on their life and if they do so and feel like they've lived a fulfilling life they will be more okay with death, and if they have not, they are more likely to be angry at or be afraid of death or dying.

My grandmother before she passed away was never fearful of death. Before she passed she would often tell us the stories she had from her childhood and teenage years and she would share those experiences with us and she would be happy that they had happened. She would always tell us that dying meant that we were only saying "hello!" once again. I think that was the most beautiful thing she had ever left my siblings and I.
