After reading the articles, we would not change our original response much, but rather add on to it. We are more familiar with the different forms entertainment can come in, and everyone has their own impression of an “entertainment”.

We now feel that entertainment is a want and not a need, yet is a crucial part and motivator of life. We also realised that the audience plays a crucial role in deciding the nature of any form of entertainment.

task 2 (hannah)

I used to think that entertainment served as a distraction from work/meaningful things as entertainment could cause us to put aside our schoolwork etc. Now I think that entertainment not only evolves and can adapt to any scale, but also may be a means of achieving insight/intellectual growth.

Task 2(Sunshine)

I used to think that entertainment was a form of relaxation, so that we can be happy despite having sad ups and downs in life. However, entertainment can also become addictive and often, becomes a distraction from what we have to do. Personally for me, entertainment usually involves digital devices and social media platforms in this digital world. Now I think that entertainment can also serve its serious purpose of capturing the audience’s attention to achieve insight or intellectual growth. It does not only relieve stress but can also ensure the continuity and longevity of many themes, images and structures.

Task 2(Yuxuan)

I used to think that entertainment was the same for everyone, where everyone will be entertained by the same thing. However, after reading the article, now I think that what is entertainment for one individual may be regarded as work for another. An example of that would be cooking, which has developed into performances among professionals, staged as global competitions and then broadcasted for entertainment. This would be a form of entertainment for most individuals, but it would be work for the professional chefs.

Task 2(Joann)

I used to think that entertainment was a way for one to relieve stress only. Now i think that entertainment is not only a way for one to relieve stress, but also a way for one to remember their culture and tradition, being a form of activity that gets the audience’s interest. It is not something simple like videos, but something which holds much importance in the hearts of many. Though it does not take up much time in our lives, it is something everybody cannot live without.

scroll down for session 2 pre module

Vera

I used to think that entertainment is merely providing enjoyment or amusement, to keep one occupied. Now I think that entertainment may also be a means of achieving insight or intellectual growth, and there are many types of entertainment as this process has been accelerated in modern times by entertainment industries.

Caitlin

I used to think that entertainment was a broad concept which included work and play, and was simply about keeping occupied.

Now I think that entertainment also shows the culture as there are many form of entertainment that have been passed down over the years, for example music and performances, yet entertainment has also evolved over the years, for example now people can easily watch films for entertainment.

Cherie

At first, entertainment to me was simply doing something enjoyable and interesting. I thought entertainment was something that would bring a smile or even laughter to one’s face. Entertainment to me could be through activities, like playing games or playing with toys. It should keep one occupied such that time seems like it flies.

Now, I realised that entertainment is a part of culture and tradition no matter what country, place, or time. It has different forms like music, reading, and performance, and different types like for children, adults and public. Entertainment is something that holds one’s attention and gives pleasure. Entertainment to every person is different dependent on interest. Entertainment can evolve over time and adapted to suit any scale.

Hui En

Entertainment means joy. The joy from comedic skits or from deep dark murder series, as long as you enjoy it. People providing means of entertainment have goals to amuse, and people find them interesting eg. celebrity tea.

I think adding on, entertainment should also be able to hold the attention of the audience, and entertainment can come in a large variety of forms, found anywhere. Audience should also be considered when providing entertainment.

Jen Mae

What is entertainment to you?

Games, dIAMOND NO ACE!!!, People being downright stupid but not overdone

How would you define entertainment?

Entertainment is brought by a situation, person or object and brings contentment and joy

Now I think that entertainment has many forms to target and entertain different age groups. It is a form of activity that holds the attention and interest of an audience, or gives pleasure and delight. All in all, everyone would find a type of entertainment to suit their needs.

Yuxuan
In the community we are working with, the elderly, they need company mainly. Without someone’s company they will be lonely and sad, so having someone to be with them is very important.

Elderly without company can use entertainment to keep themselves entertained so that they will not feel bored and lonely. With entertainment they will feel less sad as it will cheer them up and keep them happy.

Sunshine
I think a personal need of the elderlies is a way to tackle the problems of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, the older folks probably needs the methods to be convenient and easily carried out alone without requiring to constantly revisit the doctor. They may require the society to be more helpful and vigilant to look out for them when they lose their way.
Entertainment like games can effectively help to train the elderlies’ brains, so as to keep the neutral connections in their brains strong to lower the chances of Alzheimer’s disease. For example, Lumosity can offer a wide range of cognitive and scientific games which can help to stimulate their brains and improve their working memory.
Hannah To
For people who do not want to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, they need a good and healthy routine such as good sleep, aerobic exercise to decrease cardiovascular disease (over 80% of Alzheimer’s disease patients also have cardiovascular disease). In addition, they also need to have good cognitive learning skills and also never stop learning. This creates more activity for the brain and increases mental capacity.
Entertainment can also be a form of education. Entertainment can increase intellectual capacity etc. In the talk, the speaker explained that the key is to never stop learning; creating more meaning neural connections in the brain as a form of mental exercise. Entertainment can help those at risk of Alzheimer’s to learn in a more relaxed and reflective way without the stress-induced side effects.

Joann
In our community we are working with, the elderly, they are often lonely or shy. In addition, they are very vulnerable to scams and keeps to themselves for fear of such things happening to them, causing them to be suspicious and not mix with others in the community. Entertainment in this case can be useful as it can help to make them feel less lonely as they will feel entertained. Moreover, communities and elderly care centres can use forms of entertainment to attempt to connect with the elderly and get them to trust those who want to help them easily.

I used to think that entertainment was playing games and using our electronic devices, be it for YouTube or social media. It includes watching TV, dramas, movies and videos and reading books, and all these are telling us stories that allows us to immerse ourselves in after a long and stressful day. Entertainment includes having fun as well, like socialising with people in activities, events or parties. It could also be laughing at a comedian’s jokes and laughing everything off in the meantime. All in all, we define entertainment as something we use to get rid of stress or boredom while having fun and enjoying ourselves. Entertainment is something to amuse ourselves with as it holds our attention. It is something that gives us pleasure and delight as we do something that we like and enjoy.

Now I think that entertainment is a means to achieving insight and intellectual growth. This allows us to improve ourselves instead of keeping at a standstill. Learning is a lifelong journey and we should continually improve ourselves. For example, when watching a movie, the movie can gives us a moral of the story and allows us to learn. Entertainment also allows one to understand themselves better as they can relate to the character they are reading or watching. More importantly, the we can use learning tools to help guide us. For example, reading articles, be it online or offline, can improve our general knowledge and we too can socialise with people to learn more about different cultures. With the internet in our hands, it is also important that we do not abuse this freedom and instead use it to better ourselves with it, be it through educating ourselves with knowledge we can glean from the internet or updating ourselves with the latest news in the world.

Entertainment differs from individual to individual, and the same form of entertainment cannot appeal to the entire audience. Entertainment appeals to different types of people and the form of entertainment one takes up depends on individual likes and dislikes, as everyone has different opinions. For example, to one student, learning piano is a form of entertainment as they are passionate about that cause, but some people may be forced and learning the piano is a burden and simply an extra skill for them to use.

Entertainment is a favourite way to pass time. People will get bored as they have nothing to do and we people want to find something to do to keep ourselves busy. The human mind is complex and hence we need to do something that can entertain and stimulate the mind. When we are entertained, we pay attention. When people have trouble focusing their attention, their minds tend to jump from one thing to another; thus creating boredom. Boredom occurs when we have too much psychological energy and nothing to spend it on as well. This is why we seek many forms of entertainment to spend our energy on and pay attention to so that we can cure our boredom.

Entertainment is a part of one’s culture and tradition no matter the country, place or time. It handed down from one generation to another until it was used to simply pass time. Entertainment used to be a major part of people lives and started off as banquets, concerts, performances, and different forms of dance. Now, it has evolved to something instantly gratified and electronic as we use the Internet to connect with others.

Some social needs in our society are connecting with people with certain illnesses such as Down Syndrome. With the help of entertainment, we can better connect with people with different needs such as hearing-impaired people. For hearing-impaired people, we can use text message and watch sign language videos.

Charlene Tan, Claire Leong, Rebecca Lee, Shannon Woon

1. What are some personal or social needs of the people in your community?

The people might need activities that are easy for them to carry out and bond over as the elderly we interviewed had actually wanted to go for some activities, but eventually did not because her friends did not want to go with her. Given more activities that their friends would want to participate in as well, the elderly would then actively participate in more activities, reducing the risk of both mental (e.g. dementia) and physical (e.g. osteoporosis) health problems.

2. How can entertainment be useful in meeting some of these needs?

If the activities are entertaining, the elderly and their friends would want to go together to participate in them. Besides, some activities are crafted for specific target audiences. If the activities are targeted and made just for them, they will definitely prefer participating in them together with their friends, or even make new ones with the same interests. If these activities make them think more (e.g. crosswords, sudoku etc.), should they participate in these often, the elderly would have a smaller risk of dementia. If the activities require moving about(e.g. sightseeing), the elderly would have more exercise and hence decreased risk of their legs and body failing due to health issues.
