QUESTION #3: Research other allegorical connections between the novel and the Bible. Use evidence from EITHER the novel or the Bible to support your theory

1) Jack betrays Ralph like Judias betrays Jesus. Ralph becomes the leader from the beginning, but throughout the whole novel he knows Jack wants the leadership spot. Him and Piggy even hint to Jack taking over. Jesus was also aware of this betrayal, saying “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” (John 13:22). They both were betrayed by someone they were only trying to help, and got hurt from it. (I came up with this on my own and I looked up for my final one and I found this and I just wanna say how proud I am for thinking this one on my own)

2) Satan wants to become leader over God like Jack wants to be leader over Ralph. Both of the evil characters resemble eachother because they both appeal to the common people with bribe like ideas. Satan promises things like fame and money, while Jack promises hunting. Jack was the biggest hunter and was proud of the kill, showed in the story when Golding says "'I cut the pigs throat' Jack said proudly" (Golding 69). However, people who stay following God/Ralph stay safer and in the better good.

3) In the old testament
eating certain meats is forbidden. The Bible describes "Other animals have hooves that are split into two parts, but they don’t chew the cud. Don’t eat these animals. Pigs are like that, so they are unclean for you."

(Leviticus 11:8). The boys still eat the pig, showing the original sin, eating the forbidden fruit.

EXAMPLE: The parachuter could represent Lucifer, the archangel who was cast out of heaven for his war with God when "the great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him" (Revelation 12:9). The parachuter fell down to the island right after Ralph asked for a sign from grownups, and the island turned to darkness the moment the corpse appeared.

QUESTION #2: How is the island representative of The Garden of Eden and/or 'The Fall of Man"? Use evidence from EITHER the novel or the Bible:

1) The beast could represent the snake in the bible. The bible says “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” Genesis 1-5. The snake hosts evil and is manipulative. God said to stay away from the snake and the tree, but Adam and Eve just can't help it, likewise the boys on the island know they should stay away from the beast but cannot help themselves and try to hunt it.

2)The island is lonely, and the boys feel stuck and stranded. In the story, "Piggy stood behind him, islanded in a sea of meaningless color" is used to describe the vastness and loneliness of the island (Golding 73). This is like in the Garden of Eden, when Adam is so lonely that he has to make a companion for himself.

3) The island is talked about as beautiful, and described in great detail. On page 22, it is described "The air was thick with butterflies, lifting, fluttering, settling. Beyond the hollow was the square top of the mountain and soon they were standing on it ... But there seemed something more fitting in leaving the last word till they stood on the top, and could see a circular horizon of water." (Golding, 22). The Garden of Eden is a very beautiful sanctuary which is described as the best place in the bible.

QUESTION #1: Who or what represents Beelzebub in the novel? Use evidence from EITHER the novel or the Bible:

1) In the novel Lord of The Flies, the pigs head on a stick Represents Beezlebub. This is show when the head on a stick says "You know perfectly well you'll only meet me down there" (Golding 143). The head on a stick saying that Simon will meet him down there implies that he is the devil and he will see him in hell.

2) Beezlebub is represented by the beast. Since Simon starts to realize "maybe the beast is us" (Golding 84). This symbolizes the boys emotional loss. Emotional loss can make a person do crazy things and go off the rails, and become evil. The beast is an evil thing, and in this case the boys. The boys have allowed Satan into their souls.

3) In religious writing, devils are people who lead people away from God. In the story, Jack could be interperted as leading the boys away from a good life. Jack holds a meeting, where he tries to get the boys to not follow Ralph anymore. In the meeting, Jack says "hands up if you don't want Ralph to be chief anymore" (Golding 127). Jack is trying to lead the boys away from Ralph, like Devils (including Beezlebub) try to stray people from God.
