Many Hilo residents didn't leave because they thought that it wasn't going to damage much like it did in 1952 and 1957. It also damaged many homes and buildings and it also affected Japan, and had killed 138 people. Many other parts now do this, but if you feel shaking, move inland immediately, away from the evacuation zone. Also during a tsunami go to reinforced concrete buildings of 10 or more stories to provide protection or above 4th floor.
