Even though a majority of the United States is vaccinated for the mumps virus there is some discussion if the vaccine slowly loses its potency over time. Because of this uncertainty, the idea of requiring a third dose of the MMR vaccine is being floated around.

Vaccination: The best way to protect against mumps is to get the MMR vaccine. The MMR vaccine requires two doses, one at 12 - 15 months of age and the second dose between 4 and 6 years old.
2. Prevention: Mumps is spread through droplets that are often spread through coughing or sneezing. If you suspect that you may have mumps or someone you near have mumps, you can use a mask to help contain any virus droplets released.

There are two tests that can be performed to see if a person has mumps. One of the tests is an antibody test which checks to see if you have antibodies specific to fighting mumps apparent. The other test that can be performed is a culture test which simply confirms the presence of the mumps virus. 
Treatment: 
There is no treatment that is specific to mumps. The common recovery time is between 3-10 days.
