Human population is the number of people on Earth. As the number of people increases, the strain on the natural resources of Earth increases. The current population is 7.6 billion and growing. The population will eventually create a greater demand on Earth's resources, and there is not enough to sustain this large growth. By 2100, the human population will eventually stabilize between 8 and 11 billion.

Examples of finite resources include petroleum and coal.

Resources can be categorized as either finite or infinite and are either renewable or nonrenewable. Coal, oil, and copper are examples nonrenewable which means that there is a set amount that cannot be regrown. Timber or fish are examples of renewable resources which means that they can be restored. The issue with these resources is that the demand for these is exceeding the rate at which they can be replenished. Sustainability is important because future generations need resources that are in short supply as well.
