Enter, the song plugger. A daring person, assigned to make sure his company's tunes would be performed live and on records, hoping to get that new swingin hit song. The 1920's also marked the beginning of indie companies. Smaller, fearless operations willing to take a chance on less popular artists that sometimes panned out to be a big hit. But, indie companies didn't last long as they later went bankrupt and merged with bigger companies.

One very influential jazz musician in the 1920's was Louis Armstrong. He had many skills. He was a trumpeter, bandleader, singer, soloist, film star, and comedian. Another great musician of the time, was Coleman Hawkins. He was a great saxophone player and one of the first to be known for their exceptional skill playing an instrument. Besides those two, there is also Ella Fitzgerald, also known as the first lady of song. Dances such as the Charleston, Black Bottom, and the Shimmy took over the 20's by storm.
