many hands and red tape trying to drag a woman down and her fighting back. Government policy was a huge barrier to her life and created many of the issues she dealt with in the book. She fought against and pushed back and won.

Aidan Alphonso - The image of being torn between two cultures came to mind because early on in Halfbreed, Maria Campbell talks about the ways being of European and Indigenous descent affected her life experiences.

"Landscape of Prince Albert - "calm before the storm"

I haven't finished the book yet, but knowing what happens in chapter 12, I feel a sense of foreboding as the first chapters slowly paints the picture of Maria Campbell's life and history.

From what I've read so far, I think one of the main themes of the book is how Campbell felt chained by her own identity and Métis heritage rather than being able to be proud of them. Something very significant is how the system imposed on her led her to believe that it was her fault for being born that way, that she deserved it, and that there was no point in hoping for change.

When reading this book, in my mind the image of them being torn apart between the two cultures and not fitting into neither the colonizers or the Indigenous Peoples.
